A new load of movies... Jul 12, 2007

Fulfilling my promise to treat one of my students at Starbuck, this afternoon I also brought my Cam with me to shoot some clips. Youtube upload has been slow down here, so tonight (my time), I only upload the following one - inside a Roman Catholic Church...

chicken-like? no, definitely not. not any more. Jul 16, 2007

Kevin Yang wrote:

Looking at the young lady in black top and mini-skirt in front of them, the young reporter is interviewing a shopper by asking “What do you think of her outfit?” Such outfit could be called "chicken-like" in China, because "chicken" is a common way for the Chinese people to refer to a sex worker. That's why a popular Chinese call girl in New York City gave herself a nick name "Kung-Pao-Chicken". If you wonder what a man who sells his body for money would be called, you got it, it is a "duck". Can you imagine what the Chinese would think of those lady football fans of University of Oregon with their big O logo and "Go Duck" signs? By looking at the 2nd photo, it seemed this man hesitated to respond to the reporter's question, perhaps he was thinking something that could be tactic enough so he would not offend his girlfriend next to him. His girlfriend looked like someone who could castrate him right on the spot, if he gave the answer wrong.

Dear Kevin,

Thank you so much for sharing your pictures with us. Well, all looks great, including your captions except this sentence "Such outfit could be called "chicken-like" in China". Well, as a young Chinese girl who is in her early twenties, i don't agree with you at all. Shanghai as you see is following the trends of the developed world, not only in economic performance, but almost in every aspect, fashion certainly included. Now many girls you see on the streets dress quite fashionably, in mini skirts, tank tops, belly shirts, low-cut clothing, or dresses that expose one's back. Sorry I don't know how it is called there in US. Many girls just love to dress like that and feel good about themselves. what you pictured in your first photo, in my opinion, is just a trendy young girl that is commonly seen nowadays in China. and such attire, i think, will absolutely not be regarded as chicken-like at all. It does not show any inappropriateness. As for those sex workers, they may dress much more alluringly, to an extent that you can tell at first sight. I do not meant to offend you by pointing out this, just perhaps your old opinions of what Chinese thought of such apparel might be changed a little bit.

sincerely,
Amy

civilization is not that far and rare in smaller and remoter cities Jul 16, 2007

Kevin Yang wrote:

Because I enjoy Internet so much, I cannot imagine if I could survive if I have to live somewhere too remote to the civilization and plan my daily activities by daylight. My adaptation capability seems decreasing when my age is increasing.

China is really fast developing. Many places, remote though geologically, is not that backward as you might have pictured in your mind previously. Internet is accessible in many romote places and that's how friends of mine who are far apart as west as in Xinjiang and as south as in Yunnan get to chat with me online and make online phonecalls. So don't worry about that. It will not be a difficult thing at all for you to find some place that is quite suitable for retirement and also has the so-called civilization. Just my opinion only.

Regarding the dressing Jul 17, 2007

Jul 17, 2007

Kevin:

Are you going to have a party today?”

Hello, Amy, redred and Yueyin

Thank you for sharing your observations and perspectives. Our diversity in observation certainly expand the dimensions of the perspectives that we can offer to our readers. China indeed has changed a lot, especially the people there. But, there is still a long way to go. In my recent trip, I was missing certain qualities that I once was very familiar with, such as simplicity, sincerity, dislike to monetarilize everything in life. However, I am optimistic about the Chinese people's judgments and abilities to examine and digest the new ideas, including the sense of fashion, so to ignite more creative thoughts and inventions that can benefit more people in the world.

I would like to bring your focus to your camera lenses and hope you all can contribute more photos of your own with stories about your personal experiences in China. The format I used in page 1 of this thread has received lots of positive feedback. Let's let our photos talk.

Kevin

Hello, Uldis

Great o hear from you! The local Chinese people are trying hard to adapt to the changes themselves. The summer can be very hot in many areas. If you will go there someday, be sure to visit there in Spring or Fall. Let me know if you need my interpretation service.

Kevin
