I am glad that Kevin has initiated this thread which gives me a reason to share with fellow translators what I consider to be a great hobby to pursue for a translator. "Did somebody say that a picture is worth a thousand words?" Well forget about counting the source words or target words for pennies then, just send your client some pictures instead! No kidding, all you need is a "click" so you don't have to work nearly that hard. Indeed, when you realize that there are other ways of expression to get ideas across, you are more at ease to make your translation simple without losing accuracy. I am writing in both English and Chinese here, with no attempt to provide an exact match. This is for fun and I will let it take me to wherever my thoughts go, besides, there are certain things in a culture that are only understood or appreciated when you experience them. 有道是百闻不如一见，Kevin 带了头，此举劳逸结合，本人举双手赞成；无奈被催得要命的译稿逼了一个多月。今天总算脱手，暂可清闲几天，理出些这几年中拍摄的回国印象。

View from my hotel room. When I visited Shaoxing in 2005, I had a wonderful room in one of the best hotels in Shaoxing. I was treated so nicely that I still feel indebted today. They insisted that they would pay for 3 days of my hotel stay because the general manager was my college schoolmate。Big cities like Shanghai and Hangzhou are amazing, but it is in these mid-sized and ancient cities such as Shaoxing that I see a culture struggling to renew itself, along with the pains and joys for a new life. 杭州上海虽好，我先贴些绍兴的印象。作为过路人，我只能看到些表面，但觉得绍兴这样的中等城市更具有普遍性。作为历史悠久的文化古城，这样的中等城市在现代化的招唤或冲击下展现出来的是怎么样的姿态，要面对的又是哪一类难题，得到的是什么，失去的又是什么。
I first visited East Lake （东湖） in the late 1970s when the sheer cliffs posed no difficulty at all. You need to climb to the top to enjoy the view of：

但我那次没爬上去，只是坐在“乌蓬船”里摇啊摇，外婆还在的话她会叫我“坏宝宝” because I was trying to translate the above couplet into English but I couldn't, and I don't even trust Trados for that.
乌蓬船—水乡绍兴河多船多，方言中还有不少与船有关的用词，如“自相矛盾”绍兴话叫“汝自说话碰头船”（ner-ji-suo-wo-bang-der-zei）。 过桥前船老大会对着桥洞大声吆喝，以避免碰撞，尤其是满载的。
乌蓬船也叫“脚划船”，用绍兴话讲才好听。I have always marveled at the dexterity of the Shaoxing boatmen. What could make a Venetian gondolier envy is that a Shaoxing boatman can roll easily with his hands free most of the time, like this one did. For about an hour, he was chatting with me and did not even look at his foot-operated oar as we sailed in and out of the caves. He could be talking to someone on the cell phone if he liked, but he did not, "these are toys for young kids" he said.
Since the time of the First Emperor, huge slabs of rocks have been carved out of the hill site above, which is basically a monolith standing in the middle of a vast stretch of rice paddies with a network of small canals east of the city. The rocks have been used for building materials and the thousands of bridges in the area for more than two millenniums. Now some of the pieces are coming back as more and more old buildings are demolished. They are piled up in a deserted yard. I was attempted to find some that had characters carved on them, because by the style of the calligraphy, I could probably tell what time period they belonged to. But than I realized that even if I found a treasure, I wouldn't be able to take it with me. Why do I need to get so excited or sentimental for something people no longer need, including my knowledge of Chinese calligraphy or whatever. Right now these things are pretty much like junk cars in the USA, once people no longer need them they belong to the junk-yard; it does not matter how much culture is in there.
“长亭外，古道边，芳草碧连天......” 李叔同句中诗意我首先是在越中山色鉴湖水边感受到的。八十年代我常有机会去绍兴，对郊区的{古縴道}记忆犹新。那是水乡绍兴特有的一条长达一百多华里的石板桥，供揹縴人走的专用道。
我从小长在大运河边，揹縴的没少看，一般都在河道的某一边，即经常走人的一边。迎面来的縴夫常因绳索绞在一起而发生口角或事故。可绍兴的縴道很特别，用宽阔的大石板架空在河道中间，船走两边，迎面来的縴夫只要相互谦让一下，就顺畅而过，用不着为估计谁的杆子高或为了争高低而要求对方低头往下钻。不知‘双向分道’的交通原则是否绍兴人发明的。我兴冲冲赶到当年的{古縴道}区，大失所望，只见剩下一段作“重点文物保护”，其余大都占为厂房。
当年岸上芳草青青，岸边茭白成行，水中鱼窜虾跳的，现两边水中已无什么生命迹象。碑上倒新写有“本官到此一游”之类的破字。与古縴道平行的是条大公路，货物早就用不着縴夫来拉了，可鱼虾还想活呢？
奄奄一息的鱼。Excuse me for the blurry image, but if I had waited a second longer, this little fish was going to disappear, as most wildlife in China are extremely alert to humans. I would rather have a fish in the picture that is out of focus than having no fish at all for the trip, just a 爬在救命稻草上的 snail. That poor guy would be willing to come ashore if it could survive out of water, but he was never told by Charles Darwin that China would be developing at such a fast pace. Well it seems a little too late for him to begin evolution now, he'd better enjoy the leaves of a water lily that just turned pink next to him.
别以为生活在岸上的人和动物没被影响到，整个水源坏了，怎么样净化都很难了。老实说回国去最担心的是要喝水时就犯愁。有的就根本不能用了，接触了都会得病。

正当我在细致品察陆游那激情澎湃的草书，想象着八百多年前此地发生的他与唐琬‘青梅竹马’又悲欢离合的故事时，忽然听到小孩的欢呼声。转过去一看，这该不是陆放翁情种还魂吧？好一对有趣的少男少女，好象带他们来玩的大人抓到了什么东西，正在往上提呢，原来他们又钓到了个“龙虾”。我不忍心介入而打断他们的欣喜，只是远远的站着看，用长焦镜头拍下。可沈园哪来龙虾？
“伤心桥下点点红，竟是“龙虾”泛泥来！”
后来我才发现，所谓的“龙虾”没想到竟是crawfish， 根本就不应该叫虾，是一种生命力特强的硬壳爬行水生物。原来我刚才过桥时看到的桥下暗红色爬行物是这种。我一阵难过，因为我知道这种东西只是臭水沟里或沼泽地才最适合它们生长，听说其籽深埋10米以下只要有点水份仍然可以生殖繁衍。十几年前我在美加边境野营时抓到过，新奥尔良被大水淹掉之前我看到过当地餐馆有买的，做成Creole风味的，可本人根本就不想尝。Louisiana 沿海有的餐馆会卖这类东西, 哪是因为Mississippi河入海口的三角洲淤积了大量泥沙，每次风暴过后，树丛淹没，生灵涂炭，腐物翻腾，鳄鱼出没，这类东西才得以大量滋生。可那儿是方圆几十里都没几个人的地方。这玩艺儿怎么跑到沈园里来了？我是说自己七十年代后去过多次的绍兴记忆中有那么多好的东西，随便什么都比crawfish好，现在都到哪儿去了？怎么现在轮到crawfish在著名的水乡绍兴的地底下河床里横行霸道？回杭后听朋友说是前几年经日本人介绍从美国引进的。真叫哭笑不得。
我因以前在外事部门工作，请客时常有机会作陪，吃到过的印象最深的是绍兴的“百鱼宴”、西安的“百饺宴”。那可真有好几十种水产。可这次去绍兴主人家点了几次鱼我都说不要，想起那条小鱼更不敢吃，后来就差不多吃全素了。不过国内的素菜也毫不逊色，好吃得很，比美国的‘不理豆’强多了。我呼吁国内的同行们千万别再吃那个crawfish了。要吃龙虾找PK，总有机会的，believe me!
After a day of running around I usually brought back a small item or two. That day it was a pumpkin-shaped teapot. All I can really take with me is some memory, not anything for practical purposes.

Wonderful pictures as always! I really like the show and tell format that both you and Kevin used . Not only did we get to see some beautiful images through your individual camera lens, but your vivid narratives practically provided a virtual tour of your respective journeys.

看園林設計，不中不西，十分凌亂，原來，中國在這方面是非常先進的，現在卻淪落到如此地步，實是可惜。大眾對環境的保護不大重視，是宣教不彰，還是人性的滑落，我也沒有答案。再過幾年，縱使有DIVID更好的技術，藝術的眼光，亦無法拍得好照片，因為眼前景物會很快消逝，PK愈來愈變得悲觀、反動，但這何嘗不是一種另類的情懷及反思呢。

Did nothing for your hometown) were from there, and of course the delicious Xiaoxing “Huadiao” Rice Wine which is always in my limited wine collection. When I was in Hangzhou, I had the best Shaoxing rice wine I ever had before. Perhaps Lu Xun’s novel “Zhu Fu” was using Shaoxing as the backdrop.
In my opinion, what makes a photo special is its quality of composition, color, thought-provoking imaging, intriguing visual elements, and non-duplicable moment. The successful use of “Ancient Towing Path” dramatically extended the depth of view and left me with full of imagination. I could almost visualize the busy river, the brown skin-toned towing workers, with the sweat drops dripping and splashing on the hot stone slabs under the bright sun shine… Highways and airplanes made everything history.
The old Chinese calligrapher was a treasure. I would collect a fan with his calligraphy. What a lost art! Same as you, those dying arts always get my attention. By the way, I also bought two purple clay tea pots in my last trip. Yours looks much more expensive than mine. Some of them were so expensive that I thought I read the price tag wrong.
I also love particularly your photo of the boats with black sheds and relaxed boatmen. They reminded me the taxi drivers in metropolitan cities. I wonder what if I were one of them, perhaps I would sell the advertisement space by inches on my boat, and post the cell phone or soft drink ads with semi-nude models…just for a cheap business drive. What a total nightmare that would be!

A canal was dug leading to the pit so the rocks can be transported out. The sides of the hill are like a huge loaf of 年糕 where many pieces have been carved out for slabs to build bridges etc.

But remember, 绍兴 did give us one of the best “孙悟空” in our childhood memory. Mao's poem to 郭沫若 was inspired by 《三打白骨精》，and that was performed by 绍兴绍剧团(not Peking Opera). I still remember the high pitches of 绍兴高调 and the incredible acrobatics and stunts performed by 六龄童. When he yells out "Yao-Gua"“妖怪!”in Shaoxing dialect, it is fascinatingly vivid if you recall. 七龄童演猪八戒. It was filmed also.

好一句“最喜歡是石頭玩具積木那一幅”， 看来年轻人还是不知道我们在感叹什么。这里面的每一对石墩都代表着一间古代庭院的前门或厅堂前的廊柱啊!当然这儿推倒的大部分是明清时期的旧建筑,可从中看到有些很不起眼的清瘦型石墩应当是唐代前两晋时期的遗物。还有更触目惊心的，以后另谈。

My answer to your call is long over due. I am finally done with the project on hand and had time to dig into the pictures. More will come but I don't want to keep you and others waiting so am not promising anything yet. I would love to see participation from more of our friends in China.
It is a great way for us to relate to things we all care. Besides, it is really a great hobby to have. It forces you to go out and enjoy nature or interact with people. Otherwise you are not going to get good pictures.
Did you notice that quite a few members here at ProZ tell us in ID pictures that they like to enjoy the out doors, like Yueyin, Martin, Angeline; Forest's pictures of Guilin are much appreciated, as well as his image of bike-riding, reminding us not to be a sitting duck all the time. You've got to find time to go out and stretch and run.
Last time you asked me if I process my pictures in Photoshop, I do, but most of the time I only use it to rescale. My images are all very large in pixel counts as they are meant for printing. I have to convert them into smaller files for web viewing. Nowadays, digital cameras are so convenient and easy to operate, one doesn't have to be an expert photographer to take good pictures. I hope more of our members will start to join us in the joy of picture sharing. Thank you for your initiative and encouragement.

Glad you like them. But to be honest with you I found some of the scenes "astonishing" rather than "refreshing". I will find some refreshing images in the future if you like them that way. I have not been but have always wanted to take a trip in that direction. I translated many articles for the Silk Road in the past. In fact the one I just finished is going to Russia (not to England, but is not in Russian either, don't ask me why the Russians need English!), accompanying the Chinese Silk Exhibition to Moscow and some other cities. But I was going to say for many years I have translated articles on the Dunhuang Grottos, however I have never been there. What a shame on me!

You know that you don't have to be at a famous scenic spot or in 名山大川 before you can take good pictures. They are all around you, if you have the time and interest to find them and play with it, so send them in! Although Shaunna's 九寨沟 images do make me think that that will probably be my next trip. ▲ Collapse

是很花時間，上傳6張照片，花了一個多小時。先在flickr登記，選擇照片，上傳要等，出現了，再下傳Proz。陳黃安生是PK的太太，差點連她的玉照也放了在網上。第一張UFO是日照鏡頭的結果，第二張是人隔萬重山，第三張就是萬古留芳，但不知蔣公的蠟像還能在那裡呆多久，看他身後的中國版圖，就好像夢境一樣。愛書人到了台北，當然是逛書店，看第五張照片的範圍，就有超過10家。若鐵馬齊動，排放會怎樣。有空，會多放照片。
