Only When I'm Working At... Jul 6, 2021

...a restaurant or coffee house am I ever subjected to music. Could be pop, rock, although I actually do like classical or the soothing, subdued French chanteuse music that often plays when I'm working at one particular coffee house, since it eases me into my work, first thing in the morning. At home, I don't listen to anything while I translate, since I want to hear myself think.

too distracting Jul 6, 2021

I've tried classical, but I still get the urge to sing along, or even whistle (they said it wasn't lady-like, but my dad taught me!)
And it can't be anything with words, I need to hear myself think, as Barbara says.

I don't listen to music while I translate Jul 7, 2021

I love music and I do listen to music almost every day, mostly classic and French and Italian opera, and also jazz, rock, pop, fado (one might say I’m pretty eclectic music-wise), except while translating: I find music very distracting. Nevertheless as I need some background noise my TV is always on, unless I'm revising my work or proofreading others' work, when I press the mute key.

Eclectic Jul 7, 2021

My taste in music is very eclectic but specific. I'll listen to almost anything on my PC while translating but I oftne need to put on ambient or gentle classical to concentrate on checking and proofreading.

Today I took a break to play some of my own music on the piano. Then I listened to this.

Various genres Jul 7, 2021

The music genre I listen to while translating depends on the source language.
