Sooo yesterday I received an email from a certain Victoria Craig with a supposed offer.
This offer, wich must have been written with her feet, set off quite a few alarms.
First one: the ProZ profile that "accidentally" disappeared.
2nd: The infamous Gmail address : [email protected]
3rd: The message itself. "I need you to translate from English to France" (yep, nice one, it actually made me laugh the first time I rea

'Victoria Craig' is a Nigerian scammer Jan 22

'Her' profile did not disappear "accidentally", it was removed as soon as 'her' activity has been noticed.

'Victoria Craig' is the same as 'Cynthia Scott', 'Holman Vanilla', 'vanilla holman' etc.

I think the term should be just 'scammer', without any geographical connotation that could be unpleasant and unfair to people.

The term is widely known and even used by banking institutions. Just an example:

"Nigerian scams
Nigerian scams are a form of advance-fee scam and one of the most common types of confidence frauds.
The scam typically involves promising the victim a significant share of a large sum of money, in return for a small up-front payment, which the fraudster requires in order to obtain the large sum. If a victim makes the payment, the fraudster either invents a series of further fees for the victim or simply disappears."

https://www.cathaybank.com/security-information-center/fraud-alerts/nigerian-scams

It's even in the European Union Terminology Database - IATE:

advance fee fraud

Nigerian letter scam

419 scam

Consilium
pt
fraude de pagamento adiantado

Consilium

The term "Nigerian scam" wasn't coined because of an intent to target Nigerians per se, but rather because the frauds were linked to Nigeria in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
As professionals who work with languages and cultures, we are often deeply aware of the nuances that language carries.
I believe the focus here was on the context and origin of the term only rather than the nationality itself.

Same problem: Victoria Craig is still around!! Jan 23

That's god, I am checking this out! I received the project's acceptance and she asked for my bank details. Everything went too fast and it is too good to be true!
Be careful colleagues, don't waste your time! If something seems too perfect, it's awkward.
Please Proz, delete her profile as soon as possible for the best of this community. Thanks!

As a German, I demand the use of "scammerettes and scammers".
