Fail to do something Nov 10, 2009

David Shen wrote:

"But remember, don't use“失败”for "failed" every time and everywhere, OK?" Otherwise, you may get your A+ in class, but you are going to get a "Fail" from Dad for your Chinese.

根据 Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 的解释,“Fail to do something” 的第一个意思是 “to not succeed in achieving something”。 但第二个意思是 “to not do what is expected, needed, or wanted”。"

The car failed to climb the hill. -
He failed to arrive. -
We received letters from him every week: he never fails to write. -

I hope I didn’t fail to provide a better explanation. Thank you!

fail(ed) to do something Nov 11, 2009

Yueyin,

Good argument coming from a different angle. I totally agree.

An example of this would be the simple phrase "fail(ed) to remember something", or "fail(ed) to remember to do something". In Chinese one would say

Nov 11, 2009

Linda,

Linda,

Could you please let me know what the error message in English is for this particular error?

If you prefer to use 失败, don't you think "Net Framework 3.5 安装失败" would be much better?

“If you prefer to use 失败, don't think "Net Framework 3.5 安装失败" would be much better?”

Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 'package'.

I did not bring my wallet with me.
I forgot to bring my wallet with me.
I forgot my wallet。

至于 "failed to open document",在我看来它与 "failed to open the door" 这种日常用语是一码事。总不能把 "failed to open the door" 译成“打开房门失败”吧?
