Discuss away. I have no objection to that. I just don't think such a short title has so much hidden meaning to it. And if there is any, it is not a sentiment of disdain or derision to the main character - not by the author F. Scott Fitzgerald himself.
IMO, one also doesn't see through the lens of a Marxist and criticize the idea of the American dream or negatively dwell on the limitations of an early 20th century American author and the characters he positively portrayed in a novel that is widely hailed as a literary masterpiece - I say this after wading through that blog titled "杂糅的误读", which I thought was very tedious.
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

我也一直读“削”音。好像小学老师就那么教的。后来也是打字打不出来，一查字典，原来应该读“谢”音。甚为困惑。:)

“大亨”一词形象鲜活，但精神层面的承载力较弱。尤其是正面的肯定比较欠缺。“伟大的”、“了不起的”这些词可以涵摄多种精神气质，但
“大亨”就是大亨。形象是鲜活的、具体的。可以活灵活现，却很难让人喜欢。“大亨”一词起源上就与物质排场有关，用今天的话来说，是炫富的产物，精神上先天不足。
我这样说，是不是有点仇富心结？可能有点。:p
盖兹比就是这样的人：有过度重视排场的倾向，一心想进入豪门圈子里，天真地以为光靠物质排场就能被上层社会接纳。
大亨的世界是金钱至上，盖茨比则是爱情至上。

我一直是读 xuè 如：不屑一置, 又读 xiāo 如：面包屑。 谁知应是 xiè (in both cases)
我连本中文字典都没有，因为使用机会几乎是零。

我很希望如此。不过，您这话应该对点燃战火者说去。我更希望当有人一开始点燃战火时，就马上有人出来制止。那是防止“星火燎原”最有效的办法。有人一而再、再而三地使用 “offensive language” 攻击别人，难道您真的看不见？
