I understand what you said about a job well done could lead to further long-term assignments. But as I mentioned to you on the phone, I have quite a steep initial learning curve to climb, to familiarize myself with the terminology used in the Chinese IT industry. And I'm really enjoying my retirement too much to tackle that learning curve.

Probably, I forgot to tell you that this “one of the patent translation agencies” I have been working with was the very translation agency that gave the translation test to Alan. Obviously, they overestimated my capability and started asking me to translate patents in computer engineering, which is totally out of my areas of expertise. That's why I recommended you to that agency. I strongly believe that you are the right person to translate such patents and you can do the job very easily. However, I respect your decision. There is certainly something more important to do in this world than to make more money.
As to my offer to help Denyce when she was staying in the hospital, she never accepted. She is such a strong-willed young lady that she never yields to difficulties! I wish her good health!
It is also my honor to have you as my friend! Enjoy your retirement!

我是在德国学用的电脑，IT的工作环境几乎全是德语。02年后我开始在当地的一家语言学校教中文，客户是一些与中国有业务往来的公司，其中包括当时的Siemens VDO。 04年Siemens VDO急需要在当地找一个中文翻译，替他们做汽车导航仪的本地化和语音输入工作。这是我第一次接触中文软件，一开始我连中文输入都不会，那时输入中文的软件都是德国同事给帮着装的，那以前我从来没用电脑写过中文。
一直到现在，我对中文的IT用语都不太熟悉，要查很多工具，最后还要Google搜索一下才敢确认。不过我自认为已经转过了curve。
这一点国内的翻译恐怕难以理解，但是如果你周围工作、生活的环境完全是另一种语言时，转过这个弯需要的不仅仅是智慧，还要有勇气。就像一个人总是在靠右行的国家开车，到了英国不敢开车上路是一个道理：一切是那么得陌生，令人害怕，虽然开车的基本原理是一样的。

Steve 肯定能胜任。他从学校拿到 EE 学位后一直在 IBM 从事工程技术工作，直至退休。作为一位在中国生活过20多年的 native English speaker，中译英和英译中他都能搞，但他搞中译英肯定比英译中容易得多。关健在于他很谦虚，对自己要求标准特高，而且不缺钱化。所以，我就不再勉强。他现在的问题不是如何挣钱，而是如何花钱。

这副对联在文革期间就开始流行了。记得最早最流行的版本是“说你行你就行不行也行，说不行就不行行也不行”，横批是“不服不行”。不管搞什么行业，如果只有一、两家客户说你不行，那根本就不必在意。但如果屡试不第，那就应该好好反省了。如果有很多客户说你行，那就说明你确实还是有两下子。不过切勿骄傲，因为人上还有人。

可能需要些专业经验吧，我做过化工专利，但是现在不太翻，常觉得看多了都一样没挑战，翻起来也有点头疼；
看看你的翻译，句法处理还是挺欠缺，没办法拿去直接当申请文本的，所以不要气馁我觉得还是找找自己原因；我估计我去翻合同也是这样的问题所以总是做试译做得很累，反响也很一般。

试译被拒之后，就在网上擅自公开翻译公司的试译题，那是违背职业道德的错误做法。在这场讨论开始时，这篇专利的经客户认可的英译文已在网上公开，很容易被有心人搜到。想作弊的人很容易把有关片段拷贝一下，然后略加修改后就交差，不必翻任何词典，甚至连金山词霸都不用翻。当然，任何人都请勿自行对号入座。好在，该公司已... 自去年2月以来，我就一直为这家翻译社翻译化工专利（中译英）。不要以为我给你提意见是因为我把你视为竞争对手，与你过不去。无论是你，还是 Hamish，或是任何其他同事，如果能通过该翻译社的试译，我都会很高兴。如果我怕别人与我竞争，我就会在你一开始公开此试译题时（今年元月28日）就立即告诉该翻译社。一旦他们得知此事，肯定会立即停用此试译题。Hamish 上面说“这个公司到现在还没有换试译”，这就可证明我没有那样做。
