As it's explained here, I meant "I would have thought otherwise".

自去年2月以来，我就一直为这家翻译社翻译化工专利（中译英）。不要以为我给你提意见是因为我把你视为竞争对手，与你过不去。无论是你，还是 Hamish，或是任何其他同事，如果能通过该翻译社的试译，我都会很高兴。如果我怕别人与我竞争，我就会在你一开始公开此试译题时（今年元月28日）就立即告诉该翻译社。一旦他们得知此事，肯定会立即停用此试译题。Hamish 上面说“这个公司到现在还没有换试译”，这就可证明我没有那样做。
为什么我不怕别人与我竞争？因为多年来，我的翻译工作一直处于过饱和状态。而且，在保证质量的前提下，借助于CAT软件，我翻译英文专利的速度可以是翻译中文专利的两至三倍。这就意味着在同样时间内，我的英译中收入也是中译英的两至三倍。因此，我并不十分愿意做中译英。然而，我不可能把我的中译英价格提高至目前价格的两、三倍，因为任何客户都不可能接受。实际上，这家翻译社从一开始就已经嫌我的价格太高，但我坚持不降价。而且，由于我太忙，常常不能在他们需要我的时候，接受他们的项目。所以，他们招聘其他翻译是迟早的事情。我也知道他们多次在ProZ.com上登招聘广告。我希望他们能招到称职的翻译。这对他们和我而言，是两全其美的事情。
对你来说，我希望你能看到自己的不足，不要以为别人给你提意见就是与你过不去。唯有如此，才能不断进步，才会有一大堆客户追在你后头排队。

我很少做中译英，但时不时有中译德的单子。这种情况我是按源语字计算，每字价格和德译中一样，如果换算成德文单词的价格，就相当于德译中的两倍。基本上我也是要花两三倍的时间，而且用词造句经常要请教别人。这个客户也清楚，中译外做的人不多，不太好找翻译。如果客户坚持要按德文单词计价，我至少要加50%以上。

由于中文专利往往是扫描的图像文件，难以统计中文字数，所以通常是按译出的 English word count 计价。但1,600-1,700中文字，译出来却只有约1,000 English words。以 English word count 计价，rate 稍微增加一点，翻译社还能接受。但如果增加太多，翻译社一般都不会接受，最终客户也不会接受。
此外，做英译中可以充分利用 Trados。由于我集中于化学、化工、医药方面的专利，在翻译过程中会遇到大量的 matches 和 repetitions，可以大大地提高翻译速度。但我从不提供任何形式的 discount。

我的感受是：一个英文单词，英译中我就是做了十遍，还是不太会用；但是中译英只要用过一次下次就记住了。

当翻译就应该‘牛’一点。我希望所有的翻译同仁都能坚持这一‘牛’方针。
同样，我从来都不要求帮我分担翻译任务的同事提供任何形式的 discount。

如在其他帖子里说过：难点的稿子1000字弄一天都弄不完，简单的2、3个小时就可以搞定。这样总体算下来价格基本持平。如果重复率高的稿件得给客户打折扣，那么难做的就应该加价。要是他们坚持统一价格，那就绝不打折。

I confess I am cynical. I was brought up to be a cynic, what could I do?
I thrive in confrontation of words.
I have an ability to let my opponents, if not people in general, to underestimate me and overunderestimate me and over overunderestimate me. If they happen to be gigantic megalomaniacs, the situation will develop very fast in which I, the cynic, will thrive.
It is what I do best, and make sure you don’t mess with Alan Wang, ... See more I confess I am cynical. I was brought up to be a cynic, what could I do?

It is what I do best, and make sure you don’t mess with Alan Wang, especially when you are a megalomaniac.
If you are not some gigantic megalomaniac, you will soon lose interest with me and have no worry. In the best sernarios, we could even become friends. That is called birds of a feather, flock together.
