A very interesting article indeed, although the team mentioned as Roma A.C. is actually AS Roma.
The habit of naming teams after colours (or the number thereof) in the team is also common in Brazil, often with the ending '-ão' meaning big. The habit of naming teams after colours (or the number thereof) in the team is also common in Brazil, often with the ending '-ão' meaning big. So SE Palmeiras is 'Verdão' (the big greens) while AD São Caetano is 'Azulão' (the big blues). Other teams use colour combinations, such as 'rubro-negro' (CR Flamengo), alviverde (SE Palmeiras); then we have 'tricolor' (São Paulo FC, Fluminense FC, EC Bahia), 'tricolor suburbano' (Madureira EC) - this is to distinguish between two tricolores (Madureira and Fluminense) who are in the same championship - Campeonato Carioca.
Other teams use symbols, so Santos is 'o Peixe' or 'the Fish' (it's a coastal town).
Others use other names like Furacão (the Hurricanes, or Atlético PR) or animal symbols (Galo, the Rooster, is Atlético-MG).
Volta Redonda FC is Voltaço, which conveys the idea of big (-aço is an alternative to -ão) but also as aço means steel, and Volta Redonda is an important steel-mining town.
Translation of Brazilian team names, therefore, is very complex. ▲ Collapse
