I've had a rough first week of 2015, with many job offers being taken by translators in other timezones before I wake up in the morning. See more I've had a rough first week of 2015, with many job offers being taken by translators in other timezones before I wake up in the morning. Living in Melbourne, Australia means that I usually receive several job offers in my email during the night time and am able to respond first thing in the morning (usually while still in bed), most times just catching the Project Managers before they log off in NYC. However, for this past week it has been quite disappointing to receive several responses saying, "Oh sorry, we've already placed that job with someone else" etc. etc. I don't think that there is any way of avoiding this problem other than changing my sleep patterns (which is not going to happen!), so the only way to mitigate it slightly is to revise my Out of Office Reply message. I would like to hear what others in this situation write, is there a way of helping that 'all too urgent' project manager wait a few hours until you wake up, does everyone else even use an Out of Office Reply? Looking forward to your responses. ▲ Collapse | | | Turn your timezine to your advantage | Jan 10, 2015 |
We all have our own timezones to live with. But just as you may be late responding to some emails, you may well be first to reply to others. Capitalize instead on your advantages. | | | Kamta Prasad Индия Local time: 11:42 Член ProZ.com c 2007 английский => хинди + ... Give your Skype Id | Jan 10, 2015 |
One solution. Check which country's agency give you more job, try to catch their time-zone, some extent. Further, you can set auto-reply that in case of any real job inquiry Project manager can ring on Skype.
I have this problem with my Chinese clients when I'm home in the US, and with my US clients when I'm in China. I've been thinking of setting up a special '[email protected]' email account for my best clients and telling them to send only confirmed project offers to the account (i.e. no administrative messages or potential projects), so that I would wake up at night and be able to view the project offer. I have no problem with getting up in the middle of the night for an email, as long as it's for a real project, and this only happens a couple of times a month anyways. The problem is that my IPAD's email notification is not usually loud enough to wake me up, so the urgent@ email address isn't of any use unless I can link it with an alarm. If there's an App out there that can link the email notification system with an alarm then my system would be ready to go (and this would be a potential solution to the OP's problem as well). Does anybody know of such an App, or a workaround that achieves the same goal? ▲ Collapse

I would suggest you don't use an out of office message - it gives the impression that you are away for a longer period. If you want to use one, add the time you are going to be back in the office in real Australian time and in GST. | | | Merab Dekano Испания Член ProZ.com c 2014 английский => испанский + ... I live in Europe and most of my customers are either from Europe or from the US. What I do is the following: - I have an app on my phone that alerts me when a message arrives in my mail box. - I immediately look at it, no matter what, and if the email message requires confirmation, I do it via the phone, no matter where I am. - If it is in the middle of the night, too bad for me, but I wake up, sort out the email and go back to sleep. - I never "autom... After all, we chose when to sleep (it can be am hour and half nap during the day, if you feel you're lacking a couple of hours of sleep due to the night email wake up). ▲ Collapse | | | Angie Garbarino Local time: 08:12 Член ProZ.com c 2003 французский => итальянский + ... I would not advise you to wake up and reply during your night sleep. Doing this can easily lead to a heavy burn out after a while! A possible suggestion might be an automatic reply with your working hours (including time zone conversion), a clear indication that you are interested in new jobs and will reply by a certain hour, and a link to your ProZ availability calendar. Hope it helps! | | | Dylan J Hartmann Австралия Член ProZ.com c 2014 таи => английский + ... МОДЕРАТОР Автор темы
My wife would either leave me, kill me, or both if I got up every time I received an email through the night! This is what I drafted: Thank you for your email, I will get back to you as soon as possible. Project Managers: before assigning your project elsewhere please consider my timezone. Your project is very important to me and I'll make sure to reply the moment I wake up or return to the office. I live in Melbourne, Australia (GMT+10) and am active between 6am - 9pm local time (2pm-5am EST). I am willing to accept all jobs at my standard rates of $US [my standard rates], depending on source content/formatting. Thank you for your patience, my business relies on your continued support.
