An amalgamation - an entity with anew name - is not sysnonymous with a fusion or merger - the target businesses may retin the same name. West does outline various permutations of a merger with 'fusion by absorption, consolidation, creation and integration.' A US American law dictionary doesn'r even mention 'amalgamation' either. So I wonder this is a BrE, OzE or CanE creature.
Having worked with reptilian Champagne-Socialist lawyers in the Co. Dept. specialising in M+ A in the City of London, I think it's wiser not to conflate the different schemes: 'A merger is where two or more business entities combine to create a new entity or company. An amalgamation is where one business entity acquires one or more business entities.'
La Amalgamación es un proceso mediante el cual dos o más empresas deciden unir sus activos, pasivos y operaciones para formar una *nueva entidad legal*.
La fusión es la mezcla de dos o más compañías existentes en una sola compañía. Por ejemplo, si dos compañías existentes dicen que X Ltd. y Y Ltd. se liquidan para formar una nueva compañía, XY Ltd., es *un caso de amalgamación.*

Por allí también aparece el término "consolidación".
La verdad, si solo es uno más de los datos del informe, creo que da igual usar "fusión" o "consolidación". Otra cosa es que sea un texto de negocios para especialistas (allí sí sería necesario hacer la diferencia)...
