German term

Sielhafen

German to English Science Ships, Sailing, Maritime Hafentypen
Hooksiel wird als ein Sielhafen beschrieben:
Als einziger Sielhafen schickte Hooksiel im Jahr 1847 ein Schiff auf Wal- und Robbenfang Richtung Spitzbergen.
Ich weiß nun, was ein Sielhafen ist (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sielhafen), aber was ist es im Englischen? "sluice harbour"?
Vielen Dank für Eure Hilfe, wie immer!
Proposed translations (English)
3 +4 sluice port

sluice port

I don't see any direct examples, but I do find various stock photos under this term that seem to fit the bill.

Thanks!
agree philgoddard : Yes, but you need to add a sentence of explanation, because readers won't understand this. It's enclosed by sluice gates that are opened at low tide to release the water quickly and flush away the silt.

I see your point, but I wouldn't add explanation unless the client asked for it. I doubt a typical German reader would be able to describe a 'Sielhafen' in any detail, either.
agree Adrian MM. : best steer literally clear of dykes http://www.worldportsource.com/ports/GBR_Seaton_Sluice_Harbo...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everybody for their contributions, especially to Darin for the answer (I wasn't too far out!) and the picture. I did not add an explanation because this was actually for a museum and space was tight. Thanks again!"

neutral uyuni : A marina doesn't necessarily require a sluice.

Hier geht es auch um Hooksiel (DE & EN):

"Der ehemalige Sielhafen von Hooksiel bildet seitdem das westliche Ende des künstlichen Brackgewässers, das als quasi stehendes Gewässer über eine Schleuse im Osten von dem Tideraum der Innenjade abgetrennt ist."
https://www.imp-ol.de/portfolio-items/leitprojekt-hooksmeer/

"Since then the former sluice port forms the western end of the artificial brackish water area which is separated by the sluice from the inner Jade to the east and thus can be characterised as an almost stagnant water."

Danke Dir, Peter!
agree Darin Fitzpatrick : Thanks for the examples! I think the book one is a different usage, though.

THX Darin! At least to my understanding the section in the book is about integrated fish ladders in the gates/locks ('the sluice...') of a sluice port. Same feature in the sluice of a little fishing port close to where I live (Greet*siel* - East Frisia).
