Each device was tested after acute exposure (24 h followed by 16 h post-incubation) to identify possible recovery from the induced acute damage, and repeated exposure (72h; 2 applications per day) to assess long-term tolerance.
Benzalkonium chloride 0.01% was used as the positive control while saline solution 0.9% was used as the negative control.
Cell viability (MTT test), barrier function (trans-epithelial electrical resistance measurement), membrane integrity (lactate dehydrogenase release) and occluding gene expression were evaluated.
Results confirmed the toxicity of benzalkonium chloride 0.01% on human reconstructed corneal epithelium following both exposures.
