Laura Hafner Aug 13, 2019:
@Mark Something all Brazilians are too familiar with, sadly.
Mark Robertson Aug 13, 2019:
It's pretty much the same as kleptocracy.
Laura Hafner Aug 13, 2019:
@Gilmar From what I understand (and this is mentioned in the Wiki pages we referenced), clientelism involves an asymmetrical relationship between patron and "client", whereas cronyism is practiced among peers.
Mark Robertson Aug 13, 2019:
“The very essence of patrimonialism consists in the idea that "the whole government authority and the economic rights which correspond to it, tend to be treated as privately appropriated economic advantages"(Medard, 1996).

patrimonialism and cronyism

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronyism

Cronyism is the practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues, especially in politics and between politicians and supportive organizations. For instance, this includes appointing "cronies" to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications.

neutral Laura Hafner : Gilmar, wouldn't cronyism be "fisiologismo", a similar, but not identical concept to "clientelismo"? (the same Wikipedia page you mention links to "fisiologismo" in Portuguese)

https://www.quora.com/Is-there-a-differnce-between-clienteli... I'm not sure if there's a RIGHT word in this context. I just never heard the word "clientelism" in my 40 years or so living in the States, whereas CRONYISM is widely used.
