Only a fool or maybe a first-year freelancer wouldn't.
Roughly speaking:
£1k bills
£1k fun
£1k tax
£2k pension and other savings

I have my income from freelancing and from a pension. It’s more than enough for me as over the years I became rather frugal. My grown-up children earn much less than me, so I help them quite often. That being said, what I save every month depends on them

Yes- when I can. But it's becoming more difficult as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Mortgage paid off, kids now both earning well, a pretty frugal lifestyle... yes I save whatever I don't spend.

I can't take anything with me 6 feet under.
Unfortunately, I used to know 3 (say, three) wonderful well-to-do people who kept postponing their lives until retirement with so many fantastic and, most importantly, realistic plans but ... lasted between 1 and 8 months. Thrombus rupture, late discovery of terminal cancer...
No kids. I have a 20K "coffin money" life insurance - a Russian saying meaning insurance or cash that is just enough to take care of all funeral expens... See more I can't take anything with me 6 feet under.

Medicare, which is surprisingly good, full retirement with disability benefits, paid-off mortgage and yes, a bit here and there on 2 small pension plans. Nothing impressive, almost miserable by the US standards, which suggest that you actually need half a million to sleep more or less tight on retirement. A good retirement home runs between 5 and 7K/month! Praying to avoid it. But between my trip to Tasmania and another savings chunk I still choose Tasmania. And, of course, expensive shoes and facial care products:-) I'm a high-maintenance girl and live my life every day. One can get any kind of insurance, except for the insurance for a second life. Still work a lot for good money.
Next year I'll slow down on my travel. My last remaining kitty is 16, going very strong, looks and acts 6 but I don't want to leave him for long any more. No worries, he has a live-in relative (mine, not his) when I'm gone. Hopefully, a bit more will go to my savings.

The amount of my pension results ridiculous by the First world standards, but I happen to live in one of the cheapest countries in South America. Most of my income from translation goes to the travel fund, just for being able to visit my relatives in Europe, USA and South America.
