No, not usually! Jun 10, 2023

I only check my notifications after getting up, having a shower, eating breakfast, putting my clothes on and going walkies with my dog. Then, I have an espresso coffee and I’m ready for another day! My phone is synched to my main email accounts, but I only check notifications if I have to go out for a couple of hours during the working day, not before getting out of bed.

I have made sure I don't get phone notifications at any time- in bed or anywhere else.

Why would you? Turn off the alarm, get up, have a coffee (or whatever) and when that has been dealt with, the day starts.

It could even be called a bad habit, and (at least for me) it's not the most orderly and disciplined way to start the day.

If it's about work-related things, then phone notifications are a big part of my life because I exist in a very dynamic project environment that never sleeps, and things may, and do, change on the go 24/7. But this is certainly not about fear/anticipation of missing/obtaining a new client, especially the kind who'd be looking for me at 3 am my time:-). Anyway, I'll talk about a normal day start.

But this is certainly not about fear/anticipation of missing/obtaining a new client, especially the kind who'd be looking for me at 3 am my time:-). Anyway, I'll talk about a normal day start.

I wake up between 5 and 6 am but don't jump out of bed for the day right away. Maybe a natural 1-min routine:-) and cat's first breakfast with my eyes half-shut, and then I'm back in bed, half-snoozing, half-stretching. I grab and turn on my phone, scoop my cat who insists on getting under my armpit for a belly rub after breakfast, scan emails and WhatsApp for friends' messages from other time zones, pick on the titles of overnight news and in 15 minutes begin to feel like I'm almost awake but won't survive another minute without my first double espresso. It comes in 1 minute from the Nespresso pod machine, the only one that convinced me to switch from the regular espresso machine. Weather permitting, I turn on my laptop on the way to the balcony to drink coffee and have a 5-min conversation with the cat, and only then it's time for a shower and second espresso, which can be double or a Turkish option in a jezva. Here I am, close to 6-7 am and ready for work - my remote telecons usually start anywhere between 6 and 7:30 am. Or drive on site for a day assignment. That takes a lot of discipline Or go on with my day off. There is no translation work waiting for me any more. Now it's time to react to the overnight correspondence load, or find time for it on breaks at work.

PS - without belly rub my cat will keep adding his 2 cents to the telecon agenda even when locked in the bedroom:-). Otherwise, after fulfilling all my obligations to him (food and undivided attention, however short) I'm free to work for 2-3 hours without interruptions. His full Majesty is taking a long nap. He is an old, strictly indoors gentleman.

I assumed Jun 11, 2023

I assumed "phone notifications" mean any kind of push notification that appears on the home screen on the phone while the phone is locked, e.g. notifications about WhatsApp messages, about missed calls, about email messages, about RSS or similar services, etc.

Yes, I check these before getting out of bed. I sometimes also open those apps to read (or glance at) the full message (for instances where the notification doesn't show the full message), or to check the full list of messa

Yes, I check these before getting out of bed. I sometimes also open those apps to read (or glance at) the full message (for instances where the notification doesn't show the full message), or to check the full list of messages (for instances where the notifications only show the most recent 3 or 5 messages).

That said, I don't use my phone for social media, so the notifications are limited to just a few services -- my work email account, the groups.io app, Tapatalk, and WhatsApp.

It appears that many individuals prefer to approach their work at a leisurely pace, and that's entirely acceptable. However, my routine differs significantly. I promptly respond to acknowledge their messages before fully awakening, completing my morning rituals, enjoying a cup of coffee, and commencing my work. The knowledge that I haven't addressed my clients and the notion of keeping someone waiting prevents me from relaxing. Although I do wish I possessed the ability to approach things with a more laid-back attitudeCollapse

My children may be adults but if they need me in the middle of the night and I hear the phone, I am there for them.

If I see that someone sent me something I will look because otherwise I'll be wondering who it was and what they need.
While I'm doing my yoga, I won't stop, I make a point of telling myself it's less important than the work I'm doing right at that point.

never, the day is long enough. I do check other things but not mail from agencies or clients first thing in the morning. I like to start the day leisurely (but my day does not start late so I can afford to do this).

I read my emails and anything else that's appeared on my phone while I'm having breakfast, when I've put on my glasses!

I used to regularly check my phone for notifications - morning, afternoon, evening and if I woke up during the night - but now my regular clients are all based in Europe and their working hours are the same as mine (or similar).
