I am absolutely disgusted with a UK translation agency that have recently posted a translation job on proz offering to pay the ridiculous amount of £10.00 per 1,000 words. I call this exploitation, semi-slavery. And unbelievably, there were translators quoting for the job. There was even an alert, by proz, in the job quote warning the rate was too low. Am I the only one feeling angry when this type of thing happens?

10.00 vs 100.00 May 16, 2010

Maybe the real amount was 100.00 and the poster just "forgot" to write one more zero? Let's admit....

Low rates again May 16, 2010

Hi Tania,
I'm afraid things like this do happen from time to time and there's little one can do about it except for refusing the job.

I occasionally see similar offers for my language pairs and seriously, I don't care if somebody accepts them. If one wants to become a semi-slave, let him/her proceed. Those people will soon realize that they're working night and day and can't even pay their bills.

Disgusted, yes... May 16, 2010

Low rates will affect all of us collectively and individually, but, for my part, I decided to stay calm, just take deep breaths and stick to my rates, regardless.

Even lower rates May 16, 2010

There are even lower rates, like this one I have just seen (not on ProZ):

"Olá.

Estou procurando tradutores inglês/português para uma série de projetos. Devo selecionar cerca de 5.

O volume de trabalho será grande. Após a entrega de um, sempre haverá um novo.

O valor pago é 3 reais por página. Sim, eu sei que é menos do que o estabelecido. O volume de trabalho compensará o valor não tão alto.

O primeiro trabalho servirá de teste para a aceitação do tradutor."

For those who do not speak Portuguese, I translate:

"Hi,

I am looking for EN/PT translators for a series of projects. About 5 shall be selected.

There shall be a lot of work. After handing in one job, there shall always be another.

We pay 3 reais per page. Yes, I know this is less than the going rate.

The volume of work shall compensate for the rate not being that high.

The first assignment shall be a test for the translator."

If we consider 3 reais and a page of 250 words, which is the norm here, this works out at just over R$ 0.01 per word.

As the exchange rate is R$ 2.266 to the euro, this works out at:

€ 0.005 per word!

This is REAL slavery!

It seems to be a serious proposal, the poster seems to be a private individual and has included his e-mail so that candidates for slaves may apply. One thing I found odd is that he did not mention the size of the page - I am basing my calculations on the most common procedure in Brazil which is to consider a page of 250 words.

Agora R$0,03 é muito pouco. Não vale o esforço, por maior que seja o volume. Nem me candidato. Ignoro.

Disgusted too... Jul 1, 2010

My examples are not as dramatic as yours Tania but I'm fed up of being offered 0.04 EUR for technical or business translations.

I mean, I am out of work these days as I am back from maternity leave a few weeks ago and I spend a lot of time on Proz quoting for jobs.

Most of my quotes are rejected because the rate proposed is too high for the agencies and I am quoting 0.06 EUR or even 0.05 EUR.

Most of my quotes are rejected because the rate proposed is too high for the agencies and I am quoting 0.06 EUR or even 0.05 EUR.

Yes, I know, some of you will say that people like are bringing the market and the prices down. Sure enough, but what else can I do? Quoting my normal rate of 0.09 EUR is getting me nowhere, so I have no choice but to lower and lower and lower my rates as it seems clients and agencies are only motivated by money. Quality? What's that? Never heard of it...

For example, there was a posting the other day from an outsourcer stating that the translator should mention his rate in the subject line of his application email.

Well, it clearly means that people won't even open your email, read your message and check your CV/qualifications, but that they will screen all the applicants based on price first and nothing else.

I have been struggling now to find work at a decent price now for 3 months and I am seriously considering throwing the towel.

Sorry for the rant, but this is so depressing. I am purely disappointed, hell disgusted, by the industry. It's all about money, money, money... Nobody cares about quality anymore...

Sad thing really...

you can do better Jul 3, 2010

and I am quoting 0.06 EUR or even 0.05 EUR.

Nathalie,

you specialize in the same subject as I, you live in a more expensive country than I, you quote much less than I. This is not right. You can have better rates than EUR 0.05. Have you considered creating your own website? It helps a lot. There is no link to your website, thus I assume that you do not have one. Have you considered answering more kudoz question to improve your position in the proz directory?

Nathalie, yes you can.

Translators can quote without obeying the budget. I often quote on low rate jobs, giving my rate, not the required rate.

Not undermine the value of your profession Jul 5, 2010

I think it is time to stop giving away our translation work. I feel that some translators are undermining the value of our translation, undermining the value of the profession and undermining the perception that translation and documentation has a value.
