WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Feeling sad for most of the day, nearly evert day, for at least two weeks in a row. The feelings of sadness are not due to the normal feelings of grief after losing someone, or due to the use of a drug, or a general medical condition.
CAUSES OF DEPRESSION?
Sometimes, it is genetic factors that make people vulnerable and sometimes it is an incorrect balance of chemicals in the brain. It can also be triggered by major negative and stressful events in someone’s life.
A person’s personality style can also make them more at risk for developing depression-particularly if they are pessimistic and always focusing on the bad things in life. Sometimes physical illness or medications can cause symptoms similar to depression too, but it is not considered clinical depression, as the effects can be stopped with appropriate medical treatment.
HOW COMMON IS DEPRESSION?
Statistics show that up to 25% of the population may suffer from depression at some time in their lives. Most cases are mild, but 1 in 20 cases are moderate or severe cases.
RECOGNISING THE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION:
Feeling depressed can involve a wide range of symptoms which can vary between for each person, and in nature and severity. Noticeable changes in some of the following areas may indicate the presence of a depression:
Mood: feeling sad, moody, gloomy or dispirited
feeling irritable and unable to cope with everyday demands
feeling guilty and blaming yourself
feeling dead or numb emotionally
difficulty enjoying things
anxiety
dreading everyday activities
experiencing despair
Thinking: seeing yourself in a much poorer alight
being overly self-critical
blaming yourself for doing dreadful things
believing that your depression is a punishment for past wrongs
negative expectations and doubts about the future
believing that you can’t cope and that things are out of your control
experiencing difficulty making decisions and thinking clearly
thinking of suicide or other destructive activities, even planning how you might act out such urges
imagining that others are putting you down and are out to get you
poor concentration and memory
Behaviour: decrease in activities
lack of energy and motivation
weepiness or difficulty in crying if you want to
agitation and inability to stick to things for very long
sluggishness
social withdrawal or dependency on people
increased use of drugs or alcohol
Physical
Health: loss of appetite, leading to weight loss
over-eating or food cravings
disturbed sleep patterns-waking up during the night and being unable to get back to sleep, difficulty falling asleep or increased sleep
loss of interest in sexual activities
aches, pains and gastro-intestinal problems
menstrual irregularities
feeling physically ill
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS AVAILABLE?
Counselling is available through your local Community Health Centre, or privately.
Medication, via consultation with a GP or Psychiatrist
Both counselling and medication, together, has been found to be work well in many cases
One counselling approach focuses on the connection between the way we think, and how our negative thinking patterns determines the way we feel. These negative thinking patterns can become habits, leading to distortions in our thinking, which can play an important role in causing and maintaining distressing feelings. The counsellor can help to identify negative thinking patterns, and to learn how to change these habits.
TIPS:
Try to stay connected with friends and family
Try to look for positives in your life
Try to be more active and do things you used to enjoy, even if you don’t feel like it
Try to get more exercise
Try to eat in a healthy way
COPING STRATEGIES; which can help to protect you from becoming depressed
Building up your self esteem

Expressing your needs, feelings and thoughts, assertively
Establishing social supports

وقد تساعد أيضا طبيعة شخصية الأنسان فى جعله أكثر تعرضا للإصابة بالاكتئاب خاصة إذا كان متشائما ويركز دائما على الجوانب السيئة من الحياة. أحيانا يتسبب المرض الجسدى أو بعض أنواع الدواء فى حدوث أعراض مماثلة للاكتئاب أيضا ولكنه لا يعتبر اكتئاب مرضى حيث أن الأعراض يمكن وقفها بالرعاية الطبية الملائمة.
ما مدى شيوع الاكتئاب؟
الاحصائيات تظهر أن حوالى 25% من نسبة السكان تعانى من الاكتئاب فى مرحلة أو أخرى من حياتهم. أغلب الحالات بسيطة ولكن كل حالة من 20 حالة تعتبر حالة متوسطة أو شديدة.
التعرف على أعراض الاكتئاب:
الأعراض التى تدل على الشعور بالاكتئاب متعددة وكثيرة وتتنوع من شخص لأخر من حيث الطبيعة ومدى شدتها. التغيرات الملحوظة فى بعض المناطق التالية من الممكن أن تشير إلى وجود الاكتئاب:

What is myopia?
People with myopia, or short-sightedness, are usually not able to see objects in the distance clearly, so that they may find it hard to read signs, play ball games or to read off the classroom board.
What occurs in the eye?
The eye normally focuses light on the back of the eye (retina) so that you can see objects clearly. However, in a myopic eye which is too long, the light is focused in front of the retina, so that objects are blurred.
When and why myopia occurs?
Myopia usually develops during a child’s school years. The exact cause is not known. However, it can occur in some families (genetic) or in association with some diseases. Recent evidence also suggests that some environmental factors may play a part.
Why myopia is a problem?
While vision problems can usually be corrected with glasses, myopia can cause other eye diseases as a person gets older. In addition, there is evidence that the number of people with myopia is increasing worldwide.
The purpose of this study
This questionnaire will give us important information relating to you, your child and your family. Please take as much time as necessary to complete it. All of the answers you provide will be regarded as strictly confidential.
In a few weeks we will provide your child with a complete eye test, and a report will be sent to you. We recently tested children at a school in Sydney and found they really enjoyed the experience.
