Italian term

aspetti della nostra funzione

Italian to English Other History
I'm proofreading the translation of a document on the history of the postal service:

Su questi temi il libro di XX riflette lo stile di un sapere comunque alto che mentre comprende, vivendola, la novità della posta elettronica fa fatica a storicizzare l'analoga rivoluzione della posta lettere. Ciò dipende da una serie di cause, in parte legate al fatto che i primi letterati non accolsero nella sfera della poetica gli aspetti, materiali e non, della nostra funzione, nonostante la provocazione in rima di Matteo Franzesi (circa 1545):

Thanks again for any help.

Juliet Halewood (X) (asker) Jul 24, 2012:
Sorry, no idea who "nostra" refers to as the word only appears on those two occasions.
philgoddard Jul 24, 2012:
I've always said that whatever you do in life, it shouldn't be a conversation killer. Fortunately, "I'm a translator" usually elicits a few questions.
S Kelly Jul 24, 2012:
They'll probably be life of the party!...all those unanswered job applications, postcards that never arrived, love letters someone said they sent you...he'll have a lot of explaining!
Tom in London Jul 24, 2012:
Postal I wonder what it's like meeting a postal historian at a party?

Hi, what do you do?
I'm a postal historian.
Oh, how....interesting.
philgoddard Jul 24, 2012:
Yes, you're right.
Tom in London Jul 24, 2012:
The "nostra" presumably refers to the category of postal historians (of whom I can't imagine there are many)
philgoddard Jul 24, 2012:
Yes, I'd expect a history of the post to be written by a postal historian, but I'm trying to work out who "nostra" refers to.
Juliet Halewood (X) (asker) Jul 24, 2012:
Hi Phil, it's written by a postal historian and author.
philgoddard Jul 24, 2012:
And who is speaking? Is it someone connected with the postal services?
Juliet Halewood (X) (asker) Jul 24, 2012:
I've found another sentence which may be of help: Per trovare esempi maturi di postalità, ovvero del rapporto poetica-poste, ci tocca attendere un inglese, una o due generazioni più tardi. Uno dei più grandi. Sarà Shakespeare ad iscrivere ai dialoghi letterari tutta la potenza della nostra funzione.
Juliet Halewood (X) (asker) Jul 24, 2012:
The translator put "of our function".
philgoddard Jul 24, 2012:
What has the translator put? I think it may mean "our lives".

the tangible and intangible aspects of our function [see my note]

Once again, this is a first stab (see my note to my answer to your previous question):

....partly related to the fact that the early writers did not include both the tangible and intangible aspects of our function in the sphere of poetry, despite....
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Or role, as Kelly suggests - and as you say in the discussion entries, ' our' refers to postal historians.
