History of the postal service:
I'm having difficulty with the last sentence. Thanks!

...however/nevertheless reflects a learned style
I agree with the previous explanation but would try to put it a bit differently

shows a relatively higher style of knowledge
...shows/reflects a relatively higher style of knowledge that on one hand understands, by virtue of living it, the newness of the email, on the other hand struggles to historicize the similar revolution of the traditional post (snail mail)....

reflects the style of a superior form of knowledge [see my note]
This is a job that calls for literary skill, time, and patience. The following is only my first rough stab at it. A lot more work would be required but hopefully it helps:
"In this regard XX's book reflects the style of a superior form of knowledge which even though it is fully able to understand and make use of email, finds it difficult to historicise the analogous revolution that took place with the development of postal services"
"In this regard XX's book reflects the style of a superior form of knowledge which even though it is fully able to understand and make use of email, finds it difficult to historicise the analogous revolution that took place with the development of postal services"
Note from asker:
Thanks Tom. This job is rapidly turning into one of those you wish you'd never accepted! |

: This is good too! Could be "reflects the elegance of ....." - No, on second thoughts, perhaps you are right, but it does need a lot of thought....

demonstrates an ample awareness
My proposal/effort on this - to me 'alto' here means "ample" rather than the literal "higher". (The word would also fit well with the word "knowledge" suggested by others here, any of whose suggestions would fit, BTW.) Your sentence then becomes : 'The book demonstrates an ample awareness of these themes and though including the new medium of email, and using it, finds it difficult to historicise the analogous revolution that occurred with the development of postal services." [Bits taken from TomIL there..thanks, Tom!].
