Italian term

autobus termico

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial engineering/environment
It may seem really obvious but I can't find any references to either thermal or thermic buses anywhere. We're talking about traditional buses running on diesel etc. as opposed to the new hybrid types. Any ideas?

Is it possible then that they are just referring to a "diesel bus", given that a diesel cycle is generated by heat?(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_cycle)

combustion engine powered bus/autobus

In the given context of "traditional buses running on diesel", I think that the term is most likely a rather unhappy contraction of "autobus a motore termico", i.e. a vehicle powered by an (internal) "combustion engine", (an engine that operates by the energy of combustion of a fuel, such as petrol, diesel, etc.).

hybrid bus

I think this may be another possibility.

"The hybrid bus comes out of the workshops
for its first tests...First innovation, it has a hybrid series and parallel motorization with a fuel diesel thermal motor that can either produce electricity via the generator that is coupled to it or drive the wheels in parallel with the electric motor."

"Hybrid buses are being attempted in 3 main guises -
Diesel-electric - thermal engine, generator, traction motor
Hybrid - thermal engine, generator, batteries, traction motor
Duobus - trolleycoach + thermal engine, generator, traction motor"

Oh, okay - I will remove this answer shortly then!! (so no-one else accidentally goes down this path ;)
It must be something to do with the thermal engine then.
I'll keep thinking about this one anyway - best of luck!
Note from asker:
thanks Melissa, but it can't be - hybrid buses are what this other traditional type is being compared to. Therefore it's not an option.
Yes Melissa, I'm pretty sure they are just referring to normal diesel buses with combustion engines. Thanks for your help.
