Discussion

Michael Golden Jul 31, 2008:
My suggestion is that if you are sure that "szkm" should be translated as "engineer" in this case, then go with that. If not, the term "specialist" is broad enough that it could refer to an engineer or anyone specialized in this field for that matter.

(workplace) safety engineer

If you google it with a capital C, O, S and S, you get over 6,500 direct hits. If you google it with lowercase c, o, s and s, you only get about 600 hits.

agree savaria (X) : Ez is tetszik.I like this too.

disagree Katalin Horváth McClure : I don't think the COSS gives you a university degree. In Hungary, the "munkavédelmi szakmérnök" degree is a university degree, obtained usually at the post-grad level./Okl + szkm = szakmérnök, NOT szakmunkás. Mérnök = engineer, a univ. degree in Hungary.

My understanding is that "okleveles" can just mean "certified" in some cases, and thus have nothing to do with a university degree
disagree kyanzes : Michael, while it's true that "Specialist" can stand for an academic degree in certain cases, I have to agree with Katalin on this one.

My point is that "specialist" doesn't necessarily have anything to do with a degree.

munkavédelmi szakmunkás

:)

Cert.(certified) Work Safety Specialist

Peer comment(s):

disagree Katalin Horváth McClure : A szakmunkás nem kap diplomát. És az angol megfelelője volt a kérdés.

Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

if it is for the UK market then you could add in the 'Health' part, otherwise, Michael's answer is great

Sorry Katalin, but I disagree with your disagreement, -> there are many levels availiable for this type of qualification, from Diploma http://www.britishsafetycouncil.co.uk/qualifications/level6.... to MSc Level http://www.uwic.ac.uk/courses/environmental/ohealth_safety.a... but they all have health and safety in their title. A specialist is not necessarily a technician, but more of a cover-all for someone that is qualified in a particular field.

'Expert' could be used, however, at what point does one define expertise over speciality?
Peer comment(s):

disagree Katalin Horváth McClure : The original Hungarian is referring to an engineering degree. The Hungarian diploma in the question is definitely a univ. degree, most likely post-grad. The translation should clearly reflect that. "specialist", "expert" is not the same as a univ. degree.
