Discussion

Finn Skovgaard (X) (asker) Sep 8, 2005:
"Emergency" looks closer than "driving". Btw, they mention that they are not meant for dangerous work and should not be exposed to hot surfaces. I just love manuals that tell you all about what you can't do but not a word about what the intended purpose is.
Finn Skovgaard (X) (asker) Sep 8, 2005:
Not for driving They are unlikely to be meant for driving in such a kit, but rather for breakdown or emergency situations, as far as I can see from the set. They are made of polyester and cotton, btw. The manual doesn't say what exactly they are for. Maybe to avoid getting dirty hands when changing a wheel or similar. The manual makes a point out of explaining that they are not simply gants but gants d'appoint.

(a pair of) spare gloves

is all it says and I don't see why you cannot translate it this way.
Probably for minor repairs or filling up with diesel (which is very smelly if you get it on your hands).

We alays keep "gant d'appoint" (a pair of spare gloves) in the boot of our cars for such purposes....

agree Jennifer White : yes, this sounds the most appropriate to me

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all for proposing answers. They are almost all equally good in my opinion, but I have to take one and spare gloves seems to sound best to me, although others may disagree. I wouldn't decline any answer."

emergency gloves

I can only imagine these are gloves you might want to wear to change a tyre, or to delve into the depths of grease-covered engine (do they make those any more?).

Then again, they might be warm gloves so that as you trudge to the nearest roadside phone box after your car breaks down in a mid-winter snowstorm, your fingers don't go numb and you can still push the button when you get there.

Either way, I should think "emergency gloves" would cover it.

work glove

Not a direct translation of "gant d'appoint" but it's the sort of glove they mean IMHO.
