Discussion

Claire Nolan Aug 10, 2010:
Someone had suggested ''flap'' earlier in the discussion section (but removed it) and Kashew also suggests ''flap'', so this might be a good possibility, Claude-Andrew.
claude-andrew Aug 10, 2010:
Thanks! Thanks for your encouragement Claire, I've been bold and followed your suggestion.
Claire Nolan Aug 10, 2010:
Claude-Andrew, Why not post that as an answer?
claude-andrew Aug 10, 2010:
I thought of "sealing flaps" if that's any help
Claire Nolan Aug 10, 2010:
Loulou, I've been googling several combinations of possible words that would translate ''ailettes de cloisonnement verticales'', but have not been successful. Of course, if this is an invention, then the item itself may not have existed up to now, thus making it impossible to find an equivalent on Google.
Louisa Tchaicha (asker) Aug 10, 2010:
I was thinking of putting "fin" for ailette, but I'm noit sure that it is correct at all
Claire Nolan Aug 10, 2010:
Thanks, Chris. That gives plenty of context!
Chris Hall Aug 10, 2010:
To whom it may concern... Here is the link with the complete text: http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/ja/wo.jsp?WO=2009115681&IA=FR20090...
Chris Hall Aug 10, 2010:
Loulou... Have you any thoughts yourself?

partitioning / shielding fins

''Shielding'' is the job these ''ailettes'' do, as described in the patent:

de façon à protéger les têtes d'impression 6 les unes par rapport aux autres pour éviter tout type de pollution d'un fluide par rapport à une autre.

Maybe these little ''ailettes'' are little protective wings or fins coming out of the printer heads radially (like a cone?) that prevent the ink that is coming out of one printer head from cross-contaminating the adjacent printer head.

Peer comment(s):

agree kashew : partitioning fins/flaps sounds ok.

sealing flaps

The term is most commonly used for the flaps of envelopes, but has been used in more technical contexts (see urls). The idea being to protect the printing heads, 'sealing flaps' seems appropriate.
Example sentence:

Sealing flaps give protection against dust and splash water
