What is QA?

Many translation environments have QA-functions. It has something to do with quality. But how?
Could somebody explain why we should use the QA-function of a translation tool and what is the benefit?
I really don't know.

QA stands for Quality Assurance. The QA feature can check for missing translations, identical source and target, inconsistencies, incorrect tags, punctuation errors, numbers, forbidden words, and other potential errors.

QA stands for "quality guessing".

OKay, on a more serious note, it often involves checking for things that can be checked mechanically, such as punctuation, capitalisation, etc. It may not assure good quality but it helps spot bad quality. It may check for things like whether certain glossary words were or were not used, or whether certain rules were followed by the translator. Well, that's about the QA that I had experienced.

Samuel and Hynek explained it perfectly. It doesn't guarantee a good quality but it automatically checks for things like missing or extra punctuation, the number of tags, that the terms in the glossary are used. You still need to proofread the document but since an automated QA tool has already caught the 'technical' issues, you can focus on the actual translation and not a missing period.
