Thank you Rossana Triaca for explaining the difference. That is the sort of information I need to hear. My ignorance, and therefore bias, on translation tools stems from the badly translated websites that I come across and of course the 'instructions for use' which on some products are total gibberish.
Would appreciate knowing more about the advantages of such tools from users out there, who were also former skeptics, and also of any good informative sites that are not actually trying ... I started using computer for translation exactly with machine translation tools. But discovered that correcting bad translations was too time consuming. Then I started using computer-aided translation tools and today I use mostly them. However, machine translation development did not stall, and newer versions of such software produce remarkably better translations than their predecessors in the 90s. The future is in combining MT and CAT, IMHO, but translators won’t be released of brain work.
Whichever tool you use, you must understand, that you will get good results only after you invest considerable effort and time in fine tuning the tool(s) to your needs: in creating and accumulating terminology bases, translation memory bases etc. I doubt, that there are any good informative sites on this issue, because translators are quite conservative, and after finding ‘the best tool’ they become very biased to it (me as well) and reluctant to try any change.

Which CAT tool to use is a very complex topic and, as has already been said, one that is prone to bias. In the end I think you have to research a lot and try out at least a few to get a good match that satisfies both your business needs and is suitable to your skills and preferences.
You'll find a lot of information on these forums and on the knowledge base regarding both CAT tools and commercial MT.
