Hi people.

I need some assistance for MTPE rates.

Let's suppose that, when I work for agencies, I charge $ 0.10 per word for translation and $ 0.03 for proofreading/editing. My "standard" rates.

Then, the agency asks me about my rates for full MTPE. Compared to my standard rates, how much should I write in to make it reasonable?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Most agencies that reveal their MT discounts to me request a discount of 35% for MT. Personally I quote the same for normal translation and for MPTE, but not all agencies fall for that.

If you're familiar with CAT tool discounts, I'd say an MTed sentence is worth on average a 75% concordance match in terms of effort.
A 75% concordance match is commonly viewed by agencies as a threshold between a helpful match and a worthless match.
Therefore an MTPE rate should be somewhere between your full rate and the effort to correct a 75% concordance match.

Something around 80% of your full rate is likely fair, assuming fairness has something to do with business.

Extensive MTPE work damages brain cells and self-esteem, so make sure compensation caters for the aftermath of reading thousands and thousands of robotic brain-dead machined word assemblies trying to mimick human writing.

A reasonable MTPE rate is somewhere along the lines of 60-70% of your conventional translation rate. Depending on the type of text you will post-edit 50% can still be profitable, but then you will exhaust yourself (at least if your end goal is a high quality translation) and that's a bad idea in the long term.

it depends Nov 5, 2024

All depends on the MT ouput quality.
For easy peasy texts it will be fairly good no matter what engines are used (of course for non-exotic languages).
For complex content it will be quite bad if only put into a generalist MT tool, while if using trained engines it could be acceptable.
So you will charge according to the MT quality - the standard is from 1/2 of your standard rate for light editing to 2/3 for full editing of MT output of acceptable quality.
