Hello, I am planning to take the national certification exam in medical interpreting in about 4 months. I need a practice partner to practice with via Skype. I have a lot of the books recommended to study with. We can practice consecutive interpreting over Skype. I've been doing this with others, so I know the ropes. Hello, I am planning to take the national certification exam in medical interpreting in about 4 months. I need a practice partner to practice with via Skype. I have a lot of the books recommended to study with. We can practice consecutive interpreting over Skype. I've been doing this with others, so I know the ropes. I am fluent in Spanish and have been employed for years in medical Spanish (basically all translation) but now I am getting the interpreting certificate (hopefully). (I've done some volunteer.) Please respond in a post or via email and we can talk more. If you are advanced that's great or even if you are intermediate or just starting out, we can be a help to each other.

Consecutive interpreting practice
Nov 17, 2011
Hello, DJ. You may want to contact Deborah Jones, her email is [email protected]. She is also interested in practicing for the CMI test in 2012. I will likewise send her your information so you two may practice together.
I am starting an "Interpreter Online Gym" in 2012. Currently I do offer one-on-one private practice sessions via Skype for a relatively low price, if you are interested.

Start the tape recorder.
Play the practice scenario.
Interpret.
Play the practice scenario
Interpret.
etc.
Try not to cheat on yourself by "reading" the sentences but just working with the audio. Also, for the longer audios that are a "string of sentences".
Play the audio for about one to two minutes
Stop the audio
Interpret
Restart the audio
Stop the audio
Interpret
All this while recording yourself
Once you have about 1/2 hr of your own recording, you may start "grading yourself".
I have a self-assessment tool in my consecutive interpreting course, along with other valuable tools.
Other recommendations I had shared with Deb, I'll share with you:
Start interpreting the TV program HOUSE (or E/R or something of the sort, those TV programs that are centered around healthcare/medical field).
What you do is you sit in front of the TV with your tape recorder.
Record 2 min of the program while you are taking your notes to do the consecutive.
Then turn TV volume off.
Interpret into the mic of the tape recorder.
Turn volume on again.
Take notes.
Turn volume off.
Interpret.
And so on.
You may also want to try it with a radio station INTO English. Find a radio station in your language other than English. If none is on AM or FM, you can find some on the internet and access is almost always free. Find some "talk" shows on healthcare. Do NOT try to do consecutive of the news. They are not realistic for consecutive. Try talk shows in the same way as described above.
After the first weeks, go ahead and DO NOT listen to yourself for about one week. That means, just practice practice practice without any type of judgement for about a week. Then, start listening to your own tapes and start your personal "critique" of yourself. I sent you already some materials you may use to "grade yourself". Use them. See how much you improved during the week (ie, some of the "errors" you captured in the first few recordings should have disappeared in the last recordings, not all, but at least the most obvious). Then start working on your weaknesses. If you do this during the next few weeks, you should be very confident when we meet and then we can work on specifics.
