| | | wherestip United States Local time: 18:54 Chinese to English + ...

Indeed, Kenny. If the context is HIV infection, yes, unprotected vaginal sex is one of the common ways the virus is transmitted. | | | wherestip United States Local time: 18:54 Chinese to English + ... Almost simultaneously | Sep 10, 2014 |

Hi Steve,
Is it something called "telepathic","concomitant" or just "synchronous"? | | | Kenneth Woo China Local time: 07:54 English to Chinese TOPIC STARTER

Hello David,
According to www.aids.gov, HIV can be transmitted through such body fluids as blood, semen (cum), pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluids, and breast milk. Except for the first and last ones, transmission via the other body fluids always involves a sexual act, whether it is normal vaginal intercourse, oral sex, or anal, and all these to me are different forms of “性交". In other words, I don't think ”性交“ is applicable to penetration-involved vaginal sex only.
Of course, what I said above may be controversial so I still agree that "性接觸" might be a more proper term. Even so, however, a better translation should be "男女性接觸" IMHO.

| | | Kenneth Woo China Local time: 07:54 English to Chinese TOPIC STARTER Have corrected the typos | Sep 11, 2014 |

This is embarrassing. Thanks for pointing it out. : )
Edit: 這也說明英文形近之字多,易寫錯。

Usually make people upset, especially in our field of work. I gotta say though, Kenneth you've done a good job at putting a smile on everyone's face- in a nice way! This is by no means an insult! This seriously is funny stuff
The word “cum" - this actually appears pretty often on a lot of government publications in Hong Kong. It has absolutely no sexual connotation at all though often illicit a good laugh from my American friends. I think it's a British English thing (Phil, care to clarify)? More than once I've seen the word used in the sense of "also" - like "Meeting A for the purpose of ABC and also for the celebration of XYZ".

Oh, yeah, that meaning is perfectly fine, slightly formal English. Something like the Chinese 兼 when an event serves two simultaneous purposes. I guess it comes from some Latin, but I'm not really sure. (Wikipedia says: "An English linking word, derived from the Latin word for 'with.'") I assume Americans don't use it much.

I meant when "come" is used as a verb meaning ejaculate, or as a noun for semen, that's slangy. And in the UK we still mostly use the c-o-m-e spelling. So we normally see the c-u-m spelling on American porn, I guess, and that's why it has particularly "dirty" connotations for me. But whatever the connotations, I think it's good language work by the doctors who write those webpages. ▲ Collapse | | | Kenneth Woo China Local time: 07:54 English to Chinese TOPIC STARTER a good way to learn | Sep 11, 2014 |

Speaking of mistakes, I really don't think there should be any good reason for people to get mad at their being pointed out. Quite on the contrary, they should be glad because to avoid mistakes, the first thing that should be done is to admit to them.
Edit: Just adding that I laughed too. haha. The mistake really has some comical effects.
