over the years
over years
over several years
over a few years
over a couple of years
over these years
......

Just curious Dec 11, 2009

Definitely so.

BTW, Google for the wrong spelling of "definate", and you'll get roughly 980,000 hits. Google for "definate" and "definately" together, and the hit count goes up to 1,400,000

Correct.

I remember you using Google hits to rebut the usage of "refrigerate for 5 minutes".

I don't remember exactly the details of our debate either. All I can recall is at the time it was quite frustrating for me.

Of course "过去几年里已经 ..." is correct Chinese; nobody is denying that. However, I think the issue comes down to what is "better and more concise" wording -- the same issue surrounding the long drawn-out debate of "打开文件失败", on which not all of us could come to a consensus.

Some truth to it (regarding KudoZ) Dec 12, 2009

This little gem left an impression on me a while back. So I spent some time digging it out from places where I thought I read it.

I absolutely disagree with the poster's complaint about non-native English speakers listing English as one of their target languages. But what he said about some people giving their frequently "non-negotiable" opinions armed with a dictionary with Google riding shotgun is indeed funny but true ... Well, at least partially.

http://www.proz.com/post/1084213#1084213

Americans, in particular, tend to be overly polite. I should know, I'm from (the) States. People thank you for sharing, thank you for being honest, thank you for "being you" and thank you for thanking them.

So naturally we're loath to jump all over the many poor, struggling non-native speakers who consistently come in with nonsensical answers and a confidence level of 4 or 5 ...

...

Many of them list English in their profiles as one of their target languages. Some of them even list English as their native tongue, which is clearly not the case. These people are armed with a dictionary and they have Google riding shotgun. Sometimes I give them explanations for my “disagrees” -- but occasionally I just have to write “No”.
