I posted "ac(et)ylation" here only because I find it interesting and want people here to discuss on it.
As a patent translator, I know ac(et)ylation means "acylation (e.g. acetylation)", and although it seems redundant, it is common and necessary in patent documents.
I only thought such a use of bracket might be uncommon, and you prove it to be common. Thank you for all the examples you provide here.

"ac(et)ylation" 这种“惜墨如金”的写法与大多数专利作者“不厌其详”的写法背道而驰,不应提倡。写专利不必“惜墨如金”。专利之所以“不厌其详”就是为了防止侵权者钻空子。实际上,采用这种不规范写法的人极少,就说明它并未被大多数人接受。
从前面列出的例子来看,ac(et)ylation 后面的 amidations, esterifications...都是统称。一般而言,如果要用统称,那就都应该用统称。所以,“acylations, amidations, esterifications...” 是正确的写法,而“acetylation, amidations, esterifications...” 就不是正确的写法。当然,“acylations (e.g., acetylation), amidations, esterifications...”是可以接受的。

primary (agricultural) products 是我们这儿(新西兰、澳洲?)用语的一个例子。实际上初级产品一类更宽,也包括金属初级产品。
我们这儿农业领域‘primary products’ 之传统说法 一般是指肉类、羊毛、乳制品三种出口产品。工业部门领域上可以扩大到包括林业、渔业产品位置。经济学领域就会包括比如钢铁、铝金属初级产品在内。依我看,也可以说语言跟社会与经济、科技发展而发展。
回到原题啊,我猜想一般情况下搞生物化学的把..说成.顺口,到要写专利时两个说法也得表达出来,一个是正式实验室用的,另一个非正式工业或使用科学方面说的。Two different registers.
