Grapes may be placed - it's not a technical term - in small cases when they are picked to prevent crushing during transport to the cellar.

agree James (Jim) Davis : How do you know they aren't resting? Sorry Giles, maybe I should have said having a snooze. My expertise ends with the end of the bottle. Obviously here it just seems a roundabout way of saying putting them in the crates.

Grapes aren't usually left to rest but they might be raisining, which is why more context would be useful.
