I take it to mean unusual geological formations on the landscape; not "blisters" or " bubbles";

water meadows

I haven't found dictionary support for this, hence the 3. But the text comes from a museum in the Swiss canton of Ticino (see my post in the discussion box), and this is the area referred to in the following:

The Bolle di Magadino, one of nine water meadow landscapes considered by the Swiss Academy for Natural Science to be of international importance, includes the delta of the Ticino and Verzasca rivers at Lake Maggiore.
