Italian term

acquaticità

Italian to English Marketing Sports / Fitness / Recreation brochure
Le prove sportive sono elemento di valutazione /selezione per il personale, in quanto riassumono tutte le qualità ginnico-sportive che un atleta deve possedere: *acquaticità* – scatto – resistenza – agilità - potenza.

Is there such a word in English?
Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Huw Watkins Jun 4, 2007:
Here's a quote from a forum: "...but exposed to the same environment I got what people call the acquaticity (meaning the confidence with water which is not related to swimming for exampe) as nearly every kid of my riviera gets."
Sounds like Amy is right.
Cristina Mazzucchelli (asker) Jun 4, 2007:
Sports/athletics in general It's describing a kind of pentathlon test: the athletes must have all the above mentioned capabilities...
Grey Drane (X) Jun 4, 2007:
Are these all characteristics describing swimmers or are we talking about sports/athletics in general?

swimming skills

I would go for swimming skills. Whilst it's not exactly the same sort of thing as "aquaticità" I think this is how we would describe general abilities in the water such as swimming and staying afloat.
HIH!
Chris
Example sentence:

Floatation aids are key teaching tools used to support you, building your confidence and swimming skills to the point where you are ready to swim

Peer comment(s):

agree Grey Drane (X) : That's definitely what I'd use in this context. "Aquaticity" isn't anywhere near being a commonly understood word.

The inacqua website is another good example. In this case it's about dysfunctional aquacity in children.

Aqua skill in some kind of club in the USA. They speak of "water confidence". I suppose this is another suggestion.

neutral awilliams : 259 ≠ many hits - smacks of a translation IMHO (how about "comfort/competence in the water"?)//rare? 66,900 hits in IT
4 mins
This is relatively rare term. I don't expect it to have 1,250,000 hits. Do you?
disagree Grey Drane (X) : While we're at it, let's translate "scatto" with "scact"... Seriously, though, "aquaticity" may be used by one or two people, but that doesn't make it a commonly accepted word.

It's not one or two people. You are too fast at ruling out suggestions.

aquatic skills

Hi Cristina
this covers a broader range of skills - IMO it's closer to acquaticità

Peer comment(s):

agree awilliams : yes - "swimming" might not be broad enough but it would depend on the exact context - "a kind of pentathlon test" isn't very helpful
