Italian term

il mondo nel pallone

Italian to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
The title of an article on next year's football World Cup. Any ideas as to how I can translate this?

Discussion

Thanks for your answers, but there is a play on words here. It could also mean "the world in a daze". Any thoughts on this and on how I could maybe express both meanings?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In the end I decided on this answer - thanks so much - mainly because the actual text was really only a list and description of the towns hosting the World Cup, nothing controversial. I didn't want to simply use "The World of Football" because there was an obvious pun intended somewhere so this seemed to fit the bill. I particularly liked some of Paola's suggestions too and Daniel's gloBall craze. Thanks so much to everybody!!"

the world in football?

literal... or more creatively
"the Earth in a sphere"?

The world of football / Football's world

Pallone is the word they use to indicate the ball itself during a broadcast of a football match, so I guess it would not be a miskate to translate it as football - instead of only "ball"

Loredana is right suggesting that based on the nationality people who will read the article you may want to use the term "soccer", but if it is for Europe, I would stick with football.

Oh yes, and if it is a title of an article, how about writing:
"The world of football - the (best) football of the world"
I know this is already quite far from the original, however, as a title of an article, it may be better.

Thank you, Emanuela
agree Ivana UK : Yes - I'd keep it short and simple with "football world" or similar so that it sounds natural in English

Thanks, Ivana! Basically, that was my idea
disagree CLS Lexi-tech : but it misses the intended pun!

I am not sure you can keep the play on word

though, as is in Italian.
Here is what I could come up with:
Dribbling away all your cares (the world's cares)
Lost after a ball
Soccer-coated world (play on sugar-coated)
Football: the silver lining of every cloud

I hope I gave you some ideas, I am sure you can do better than me.

VS

It all depends on the content of the article. If it's all about the game and the players and the teams that will play in Germany it could very well be "The World in a Ball". If instead it's about the crayness that sorrounds the sport il could be The World in a crazy ball or something to that avail.
In italian "andare nel pallone" loosely means to go nuts

gloBALL craze

a feeble attempt...just to keep the play on words and similar spelling gloBAL and footBALL

I hope my - crazy - train of thoughts is clear....:
mondo (global),
pallone (ball),
craze (essere nel pallone)

neutral Antonio Volpe Pasini : non male davvero

grazie, in effetti forse valeva più di un "2" di confidence rate..ma non è importante. ;-)
neutral Ivana UK : the only problem is that glo-ball already means something else in English (Glo-ball floor lamp )

You could be right, however *glo-ball lamp* plays on the words glow and ball, separating them with a hyphen. My suggestion is a deliberate mispelling and partial capital letters of 'global' to include the concepts of "mondo" and "pallone"
agree Ilaria A. Feltre : Secondo me e' un'ottimo compromesso che permette di mantenere il gioco di parole
