Is "walled-off from the past and the future" sufficient, or is there a better way of expressing the term?
(I understand the phrase as referring to the inability to conceive of the future, or perhaps better an anguish that comes when one realizes one is somehow cut off from the future. The author refers to a lack of transcendency in some cultures, lack of forethought or thought of the future. Honestly I'm not exactly sure I'm understanding this author.)

This has a similar meaning to me, but just different imagery. Whereas the Italian connotes ideas of embankments, the English has a similar phrase which just happens to connote ideas about sewing - both being works of manual labour.

Perhaps the author is saying that the feeling of being trapped in the moment, of the absence of continuity between past, present and future leads to a sense of lack and extreme anxiety?
