Italiano term

granitica indipendenza

Entrambi aiuteranno a crescere.

stone-hard independence????

agree mlreid : I like this very much. Poetic appropriateness.

Thank you very much, mlreid!
neutral Michael Korovkin : sounds (to me) rather ambiguous, implying gloomy solitude. Poetic – yeah; but: say, one gets a divorce and then gets one's face rubbed/smashed on the cold granite of one's newly regained independence. How's that? :)))

cold-hearted/hard-won independence

literal translation won't work here

cold-hearted=as hard as a rock

"hard-won"=found it difficult to gain independence
Peer comment(s):

neutral Sara Maghini : I like your idea, but I think it's a bit risky, as it might result in an over-translation: we're not sure the protagonist "found it difficult to gain independence".
