lilting ballad
Chambers online:
lilt noun 1 a light graceful swinging rhythm. 2 a tune, song or voice with such a rhythm. 3 a springing, swinging quality in someone's walk. verb (lilted, lilting) intrans to speak, sing or move with a lilt. lilting adj.
ETYMOLOGY: 16c.
But I also like Mr Beppe's 'lively' ballad, so I would say:
'una fresca ballata incalzante' = a lively lilting ballad

Jim Tucker (X)
: good; "ritmo incalzante" is a frequent collocation, so here by extension // OK, though that meaning is not always applicable, and probably not so for a ballad.

Thanks Jim, actually the Italian word may also mean "moving faster and faster" or rather "with an increasing rhythm", but one can't use so many words here! /// Yes, I certainly agree. :)

fast paced, highly rhythmed
"Incalzante" means (literally) that something manages to make you feel compelled to put on your 'calzature' and get going (IN + CALZARE). It may also refer to the fact that that something is so compelling that it envelops you. "Incalzante" is usually paired with rhythm (ritmo incalzante) also in literature when it refers to the rhythm of a narration; and therefore it suggests that the ballad is highly rhythmed
Example sentence:
un finale dal ritmo incalzante --> a compelling, highly rhythmed (fast paced) finale
la narrazione ci porta a ritmo incalzante verso l'episodio conclusivo --> the narrative's increased rhythm leads us rapidly into the finale

Discussion
Accordingly, the dance begins with slower, smoother actions, 'gradually transforming into faster, vivid ones'
