DF

Da Italiano a Inglese Medico/Sanitario Medicina: Farmaceutica adverse reactions
Buona sera,

I'm translating a report on adverse reactions for several drugs. There is a table displaying the types and locations of reactions along with related details.

Under the Posology column it says: 1 DF TOTALE

The drug is a solution for injection. Any suggestions as to what DF stands for?

Grazie in anticipo!

Discussion

Joseph Tein Dec 30, 2017:
Changed my mind! See reference comment.

The form I'm working in says "Drug Structure Dosage Number: 1 DF." Later it gives "Drug Cumulative Dosage Number = 148 DF."

"1 Drug Form" and "148 Drug Forms" does not make sense to me. "1 Pharmacological Dose" and "148 Pharmacological Doses" does make sense ... the reporting form is asking for how much medication the patient took before the adverse reaction occurred.

Joseph Tein Dec 30, 2017:
I do think it's "dosage form" (looking for this acronym tonight for my own project ... and I understand why you would not reveal the name of the drug).

Here's an Adverse Drug Reaction reporting form that has this Dosage Form in one of the fields (first page, under Product) : https://www.fresenius-kabi.com/eg/documents/ADR.pdf
philgoddard Mar 6, 2013:
Could it be the English "dosage form"?
Aleyna Tusa (asker) Mar 6, 2013:
I can't give the name of the drug But since I posted, I've seen the phrase is used for more than one drug. They're all solutions for injection, but were administered to treat different things (renal colic and abdominal pain).
Joseph Tein Mar 6, 2013:
type of drug? Is there some reason you can't give the name of the drug? That might help identify what DF is. The more context you give, the better ... always.

DF (dosage form)

Dosage form
Dosage forms are a mixture of active drug components and nondrug components (excipients). Depending on the method of administration they come in several types. These are liquid dosage form, solid dosage form and semisolid dosage forms. A Liquid dosage form is the liquid form of a dose of a chemical compound used as a drug or medication intended for administration or consumption. Common dosage forms include pill, tablet, or capsule, drink or syrup, and natural or herbal form such as plant or food of sorts, among many others. Notably, the route of administration (ROA) for drug delivery is dependent on the dosage form of the substance in question.
Various dosage forms may exist for a single particular drug, since different medical conditions can warrant different routes of administration. For example, persistent nausea and emesis or vomiting may make it difficult to use an oral dosage form, and in such a case, it may be necessary to utilize an alternate route such as inhalational, buccal, sublingual, nasal, suppository or parenteral instead.

"forma di dosaggio" o "forma farmaceutica":

▫L'impiego del farmaco avviene, quasi sempre, dopo averlo trasformato in un “medicamento composto”.

disagree Joseph Tein : Actually ... as I do more research on this ... I do not think this correct in this context. I think the correct expansion here is "dose farmacologica". See the reference, and discussion above.

dose farmacologica

I think that in this adverse drug reaction context, DF is more likely to stand for "dose farmacologica"

Viene definita come“Dose farmacologica”(DF) la minima quantità di sostanza attiva contenuta in una "dose" di forma farmaceutica (es. in una compressa, in una fiala ecc.)
