business combinations
From the context this would seem to be simply business combinations, the technical term for groups of companies (the Fiat Group, etc.). It is well known in economics that globalisation is having strange effects on the types of business combinations that are emerging, where specialisation is increasing where whole countries specialise in a specific production process and huge multinationals consists of groups of companies spread across the globe that own the whole supply chain vertically, hence the unusual forms of business combinations. This weakens rather than increases competition through transfer pricing within groups.
