Italian term

ghiandatico

Italian to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry
Full sentence: Questa tipologia di allevamento suino brado tradizionale sarà limitata in quei contesti dove esiste la possibilità di sfruttamento del pascolo comunale (ghiandatico), e dove lo stesso sia consentito o consentibile
According to a (badly translated) Italian website I found, it appears to be some kind of fee to use the pasture land. That could fit in the context, but can anyone confirm this or come up with a better solution? Many thanks in advance:

I have tried to post some refs, but to no avail. Could it be tithe?

Fabrizio Zambuto Aug 25, 2010:
this is a definition from http://www.sardegnaambiente.it/j/v/152?c=1564&s=19072&t=1&v=...
"Si parla quindi di uso di pascolo, uso di erbatico, cioè diritto di falciare erba nel bosco, uso di ghiandatico ovvero diritto di raccogliere o far mangiare le ghiande nel bosco agli animali"

(grazing) tithe/rent

Peer comment(s):

neutral Michele Armellini : If nothing better is available. Tithe"'s main meaning is the church's tax, "decima". "Grazing" is very generic and could well be a translation for "pascolatico" or "fida", while "ghiandatico" is much more specific to pigs eating acorns.

pasture right(s) / right of woodland grazing/forest pasture

'Una legge dei Visigoti aveva instaurata una tassa, il "ghiandatico", che stabiliva una decima sui maiali a favore del proprietario del bosco, normalmente il feudatario, che andavano là a pascolare.'
(source, footnote 15, http://storia.sangiorgiodipiano.net/dblog/articolo.asp?id=51...

'Chi non possedeva boschi, ed era costretto ad affittarli, doveva pagare il ghiandatico, una tassa per le ghiande raccolte o consumate dal branco, oppure dare la decima porcorum, la decima parte dei maiali pascolati, al proprietario del fondo.'
(source, http://www.mondimedievali.net/pre-testi/giaffreda2.htm)
In spite of retaining the woodland/forest flavour

Here are a couple of excerpts from links (one a blog) mentioning the Italian and the English (however tentative) translation:

'That was the time when the Northern planes were covered by great oak forests, producing large amounts of acorns, the pigs' favourite food. Swines used to confer value to the woods, the latter being appraised by the market according to the number of pigs that could pasture there. And for the said grazing a "ghiandatico" (pasture-related fee) was paid.
(source, www.adottaunsuino.com/en/homepage.php)

'In some regions (predominantly in rural areas in southern Italy) you may occasionally come across rights of feudal origin, which can cause some difficulty with a transfer of title because they operate outside the registration system. These are known as usi civici and include activities such as legantico (the gathering of firewood), acquatico (the drawing of water), erbatico or ghiandatico (grazing), building shelters, extracting lime, picking mushrooms and taking other woodland produce for example.'
(source, http://expatsinitaly.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11629&sta...

The entry in the Wörterbuch der Landwirtschaft (Dictionary of Agriculture) for 'diritto di ghiandatico' is 'right of woodland grazing' or 'right of forest pasture'.

Hope this helps, anyway.

Yes. I don't know how to translate it, but the ending is a clear give-away, it's like legnatico and so on. A tax to be allowed to let your pigs eat the acorns in the woods.
