Italian term

compravendita

Italian to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings macroeconomics
Hi there,

I know what this means, but I'm trying to find a good word for it in context. I've got a translation which is prefaced by several quotations in Italian. I've been told by the client to translate these sentences myself instead of bothering to find the English translations which I suspect already exist of the whole works they come from. This is one of them:

"Il progresso della scienza si basa sulla condivisione del sapere, non sulla compravendita. (A. Sen)"

The text itself is academic high register. The other quotations are from Proust and Parmenides. So if anyone has some elegant-ish suggestion (or better yet, knows of the actual English translation) I'd love to hear it.

Thanks,
Anna

Anna, I am thinking that the original might have been badly translated into Italian. Is it possible that the original phrase would be the following" the progress of science is based on trading knowledge not goods" this would explain the original thought.
Anna Strowe (asker) Aug 15, 2006:
Final translation I'm still trying to find out the correct English version for this: I've got two posts on different economics/sociology websites, and I sent an email to Prof. Sen's secretary. The second looks like it won't work out; she says he's travelling until mid-September, and I have to send the translation on August 20th, but I'm hoping that the first will get me something. If not, this is the translation that I'll put in (with a note that it's translated from the Italian):

"The progress of science is based on the sharing of knowledge, not on commerce."

I wanted a concise way to indicate business arrangements and financial dealings, and I didn't want to stray too far from the Italian, since the Italian is already a translation.

If you are still curious, please feel free to email me.

Again, thank you to everyone who posted an answer, comment, or note.

I haven't been able to find anything of this quote on the internet, and when I contacted the client through the PM, they just said to translate the sentence myself from the Italian instead of telling me where it was from.

Quella frase è di Amartya Sen, premio Nobel per l'economia indiano, che sicuramente ha scritto quella frase in inglese. Sarebbe bello sapere dove trovare l'originale...

Unfortunately the times it has come up in the Kudoz glossary it was always in a pretty strict business context, so the translations offered have been quite business-like. I'm sort of looking for something which captures the same idea but is a little less... blunt and a little more pretty.

Hi there - if you check the Kudoz glossary you'll find that this term has come up several times in the past. I'm sure that one of the answers will be appropriate!

business

Secondo me in questo caso compravendita va intesa nel senso largo della parola cioe' affari-affaristica e quindi business....in bocca al lupo, PC

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you to everyone who commented on this. I've kept trying to find the original with no luck; I think I will use "commerce" in the translation, but this was the closest and helped me sort out my thoughts. I really liked Vittorio's recreation of the sentence, but I don't feel that I should stray that far from the original."

trading

I haven't been able to find that quotation either, but I think 'trading' could fit here.

conveyance

I think this could mean "conveyance" - I've just used this in a business translation and it meant so.

trading value - Credo che sia necessario intervenire diversamente.

Science can achieve by far more progress by sharing the knowledge than by trading the economic and monetary value of its findings.

Credo che sia questo il senso del pensiero!

I would like to see the way the questioner translated the whole thing. To me neither commerce nor business can possibly render the true meaning of compravendita. It would be better to opt for buying and selling of the findings than to try to render it as the commercial or business value. Just a thought! As you all know, I do not do this for the points! It's always for the sfizio!

I've posted a note with my final choice and a short explanation. Please see above. If you're still curious, please email me!
