Italiano term

Lords of war, masters of war?

Discussion

Juliet Halewood (X) (asker) Feb 14, 2008:
I thought a warlord was a military leader exercising power on his own, i.e. accountable to nobody. Colleoni was in both Milanese and Venetian service. And isn't it usually used in a negative sense? Here they say "uno dei più grandi" as if it were a great thing. Or is warlord also used in this way? Thanks for your help.

Condottieri

This is the term used also in English. Check this Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condottieri
In my opinion the author is using improperly signori della guerra, or war lord. A war lord is a chief, a barron who battles with other chiefs and barrons for supremacy. Colleoni was a mercenary
Peer comment(s):

agree Jim Tucker (X) : probably the most intelligent solution, perhaps supplemented by 'or "masters of war"' ; "warlord" has the wrong connotations

agree paolamonaco : la collocazione storica è decisamente questa.

agree Katy Ferrari : this fits best in the historical context

agree Rachel Fell : Condottieri, certainly, though I thought an alternative name/term to this was required
