Discussion

Patricia Crotty Oct 12, 2005:
Sorry, coming in late here. A continental rise is a gently sloping rise of sediments at the base of the continental slope, found deep under the sea. It is not the right translation here. A better solution is plateau of basement/raised basement rock
Stefano Asperti Oct 11, 2005:
Scusa "continental shelf". Ho cancellato inavvertitamente una parte.
Stefano Asperti Oct 11, 2005:
Per zoccolo io direi "shelf". Non sono sicuro su "prismatic". Many-sided forse, ma non trovo riscontri...

I've done some research and have a new suggestion

*Plateau consisting of bedrock with multiple facies*

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&oi=defmore&defl=en&q=...

this is a very technical interpretation of *sfaccettato*
but I'm not really sure it applies here (no useful googles for altopiano + sfaccettato/a/i/e)

other possibilities for *sfaccettato* (with _very_ different meanings):

dissected
fragmented
broken
