Contesto (Columbus and his men are in the process of heading off on another voyage):

Il mattino dopo si erano svegliati tutti molto presto, non solo quelli che facevano parte degli equipaggi e dovevano prendere parte alle manovre, ma anche gli altri. Un po' per l'ansia della partenza, un po' per assistere al momento del distacco dalla propria terra, si erano radunati in coperta o, sulle navi più grandi, sui castelli, e si sporgevano dalle murate, commentando scherzosamente il lavoro dei compagni, tanto per tirar su il morale.

Partly because of anxiety (excitement?) about the departure, partly not to miss the moment of separation / casting off from the motherland, they had all gathered ....

I think this is a more "English" way of doing it rather than partly in order to take part in .....:(

You could use either -in part- or -partly- as they are interchangeable.
