Italian term

camerone

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general)
it is a railway structure (chamber like)where trains merge into. I can't find a suitable term for it.

Discussion

Ivana UK Jul 23, 2005:
I don't know what the term is in English, but I'd be very wary of using "romm" or "large room" - these terms are only associated with actual building - like houses and offices etc and not with railways.
Non-ProZ.com Jul 23, 2005:
Hi Michele here is what I used "large size train merging tunnel-concourse" which is a bit of a combination of terms. It cannot be a railyard because that's where trains are parked but here they are talking about transiting lines which are active.
Michele Fauble Jul 23, 2005:
Maybe 'underground railyard'?
Non-ProZ.com Jul 23, 2005:
Hi Michele...thinking about it ..I find that the camerone that they are talking about is a big underground (tunnel) large size huge room (or cavern if you like) where trains merge. These are seen mostly in Undergrounds (subways) systems. But here it seems to be a place or portion of the tunnel where there is no dividing walls and the tunnel becomes big and trains merge on different tarcks
Michele Fauble Jul 23, 2005:
As far as I can determine, the English term for 'camerone' is 'concourse'.
"The bright, airy new train station concourse featuring a giant glass faade and a roof constructed of steel supports ..."

big/large room

maybe you can go for the literal meaning which is "big/large room" and leave camerone between brackets.

room or chamber of course

neutral Michele Fauble : I can't imagine a room, however large, where trains enter or merge. As far as I can determine, the English term for 'camerone' is 'concourse'.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks Ziad for the help...I guess I'll have to go with an explanation between brackets..it seems that there isn't a term for it or if there is one..I can't find it. "
