Which is not surprising because it googles zero so it isn't absolutely not a standard term. Interoperable just means they can work together, exchange data, a very commonly used term. I am pretty sure of that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interoperability
As for architecture, I have had long conversations on the subject for years with my brother who is a "software architect". It is the design of software and the selection of the systems and platforms to run it on.
