agree Roberta Tabolacci : to sophieisidoro: here 'ad un tempo' means 'allo stesso tempo/sia..sia', so translating it with "both...and" is correct...hope my explaination is clear...

esoteric yet engaging

It seems to me that "ad un tempo" is endowed with an adversative force and function in that context .

In my view "esoterica" and "trascinante" are compared and ultimately contrasted in that sentence.
