Italian term

al bruno

Italian to English Other Agriculture Viticulture
giovani piante franche o innestate in fase vegetante o *al bruno*

Would "dormant" or "woody" be more appropriate here? The context is potted vine cuttings, so dormant (i.e. in winter) would seem more likely to me. This is for an official glossary, so I need to use the correct terminology.

Discussion

Wendy Streitparth Jun 1, 2021:
Was I missing something? I thought we were talking about cuttings not grafting.
Barbara Cochran, MFA May 30, 2021:
Degree Of Ripeness? It seems like the term might refer to maturation/degree of ripeness, based on what I see here: https://context.reverso.net/translation/italian-english/al b...

Referring to their brown color. Not really sure, though.

I'm not an expert but this seems a viable option. HTH

Dormant season grafting is done before spring growth starts, when both the rootstock and scion are dormant. The second type, bark grafting, is done after the rootstock begins growth in spring, but with scion collected in winter and artificially kept dormant by refrigeration

winter grafting

FWIW I have heard to it referred as winter grafting/pruning.

The first reference refers to winter grafting.

The second online reference is to an Italian gardener performing the winter pruning of an apple tree, which is referred to here as "potatura in bruno". (He also does some rather nifty grafting).
