Thomas Mann "Mário és a Varázsló" c. könyvéröl egy enyhén fellengzös összefoglaló: "Az író és családja egy eleinte jelentéktelennek tűnő illuzionista produkciója kapcsán éli át a kirekesztő nacionalizmus, a fasiszta eszmék, az érzelmekre alapozó hatásvadász hatalmi gőg kialakulását." A mondat utolsó harmadához kellene segítség, kb. onnét hogy "zaz érzelmekre alapozó hatásvadász hatalmi gőg". A "hatalmi gög"-re szerintem passzol a "megalomania". De a többi valahogy nem áll össze.

"hatásvadász" is difficult to translate, "aiming to impress" is the best I can think of, but that equals "lust for power"...
so you could do "kettőt egy csapásra"...unless someone comes up with a better solution...

András' "pompous" is at least as good as "grandstanding" if not better, though it does start to look overdone and cliché at that point; still, pompous would be more usual.
